I was held up on the M5 for about an hour, while the road was closed because a chap had been killed changing his wheel on the hard shoulder.
Another driver swerved on to the hard shoulder, and hit him while he was jacking up the car.

No Kumhos.
Not much use on M5, but one of the(many) things that p'd me off about the SLK driver was, upon seeing warning triangle missing from inside boot lid, I asked where it was. I wanted to give us a little bit of a chance. Her response was " oh I don't know about that sort of thing." Second only to response on asking for locking wheel nut: she handed me a socket set. On explaining what I needed , again she had no idea.
People should not be allowed a licence , unless they know the most basic maintenance. Not much, just how to check oil if driving a car without digital dipstick, how to top up windscreen/radiator fluids, how to change a wheel and how to check tyre pressure and put in air.

Many years ago I used to cut the grass along the verges. Along A-roads and motorways it would be a constant shower of tits and arse as the flail went along. I figured most truck drivers drove oee-handed.
I know I shouldn't be giving this as much thought as I am, but.......... perhaps it was lorry drivers, and travelling salesmen getting rid of the evidence before going home?

Stored vertical in the Classic, together with the 2 section handle & a couple of wheel chocks ;)
The one in my Disco 1, just like everyone else's (300tdi) had its own vertical stowage place under the bonnet. It has never leaked.
The one in TD5 stowed in the official stowage place on its side next to the battery, has leaked for quite a while now.
After topping it up and putting it in the rear pannier I assumed it may have been the heat making it leak, i.e. somehow creating extra pressure and forcing the oil out, but now I have had to give up trying to work it out, just top it up, store it vertically in a plastic bag in the pannier and just carry a trolley jack as i have been for a while now.
I might look and see if my D1 one will raise the D2 to a suitable height and substitute it until I get around to rebuilding it. Or replacing it.:(
Can't help feeling they weren't designed to be stored on their sides and maybe proximity to engine and rad heat doesn't help.

Amazes me on LZ how many say they have problems with Series and Defenders which would have been avoided by basic daily maintenance checks.

People have become dependent on what we used to call "idiot lights", which is all very well until the light blows, or there is a problem with something that doesn't have a light.

Thought it had been introduced recently where under the bonnet you had to show where all the different fluids went and how to check them

When I did my test and they ask you to read a number plate at distance, had to pop the bonnet and he asked me to point to the dipstick that was all. Fair time ago was when they first introduced the theory test

Totally agree but you are made of sterner stuff than the wusses we have now adays.
!0 years last month since I lost my dad:oops:
Lost mine 18yrs and 3 days ago.
Not sure I was made of sterner stuff, maybe just taught better, by those who brought me up and Army. The wusses we now have are the product of the actions of those, who since the 80s and 90s, have been fighting to remove all challenges from the lifes of youngsters. It isn't the kids who get laws changed.

I still first parade the Golden Girl. Even in the rain. Also do check for fluids underneath almost everyntime I pass her :)
