Hi, I am starting the restoration of a 1970's two door which has had a Perkins 4.236 3.8ltr conversion. I have completed all the ancillary work left by previous owner and rigged a preheat system up. Has anyone got a "best buy" battery which would crank the ol' gal? What sort of amps do I need and would I be better off trying my local Tractor spares shop? Can't get any info from places like Diperk or my local Landrover specialists. Does anyone have knowledge of early 4.236 engines, I could really do with some info. I need exhaust gaskets!

My first RR, a 1975 classic had the 4236 in when I got it, it had two batterys on it and it needed them, find your self a farm spares place for battery price and the engine was fitted to some MF tractors and Claas combines amongst other things.
 
Thanks for the advice, I had a feeling that I was either looking at twin batteries or something agricultral. The last job is to plumb in the brake servo. The Perkins has a pump/compressor on lower left under the speed regulator/fuel filter. It had a piece of butchered vacum hose left on it, can this hook up to the servo? I have no history on the engine so not sure if it is MF etc...

he has been retired 10 will test his memory for you

Do know abloke running a perkins in a classic RR may see him tomorrow as well about a BMW 2,5 engine for mine> Depends on howe the transfer seal replacement goes if not it will be fri

I have found a 110 amp battery which is a nice fit @60.00 + VAT from Lincs Auto Services in Spilsby, they seem to have good prices on most things, other suppliers started at 100+ for the same. I am still interested in anyone who can give me info on the Perkins motor re: Servo hook up etc.. I have been given details for a company called Motor and Diesel Engineering in Ruskington who are apparantly ideal for all things perculiar and understand that there is also a long established Landrover conversion Company in the same village. For anyone interested in owning a 2 door, I have been offered a 1984 with turbo diesel conversion and 5 speed disco box which has had a commercial conversion from new. Present owner has had it since 84/85. I believe the mileage is 40-50k. He is looking for offers around 600. It will need restoration but looks straight and is complete. Let me know if interested and I will pass on his contact details. I declined the offer as I was only interested in it for parts and my Wife would kill me!

HI james i run a classic rr +perkins engine ,no provision vacuum take off so i fitted an alternator with vac pump on rear,i believe its of a nissan bluebird diesel but not sure!!!!! however ive been told ford transits are fitted with an alternator +vac pump ,so keep your eyes peeled mate mine works fine by the way.....hope this helps....dave
 
Spoke to my dad today, he was on the track that made that engine before he retired.
They were still making them 17 years ago

they then moved to a 4440 which replaced it
Lot of this engine 4.236 went into massey fergurson tractors, so try a agrigulutural spares /repair place

There are lots of perkins agents out there just quote the engine model to them

They came turbo and normally aspirated, but the block is the same just a different head.

Thanks Big Dave and Cavey for your help, I will certainly look into alt/vac pump solution and a possible head coversion for turbo power at a later date. It's strange that there is so little secondhand stuff about for the 4.236 considering the length of production? Alt/vac seems a more sensible course than the unknown plus I have a Transit knocking about, so will check it out in the morning.

Just been speaking to the father in law who is a farmer, they run that engine in some massey tractors with front loaders for moving hay in harvest

Both Dad and john raeckon they are a bloody good engine

There is a bloke / garage / parts place in Ramsey who is Mr perkins diesel spares, if he hasn't got it you wont get it
Will see if i can get you some contact details later in the week

Seem to think my 4236 had vac pump where you said if engine is a runner just put your finger over pipe you,ll soon find out if it works, B and M services here in Lincoln had all the bits when I re rung mine but that was a few years ago.
 
It sucks! Got the old brute started last night with a lot of effort. The pump sucks, so it may well be a straight fit to servo. Thanks Cavey 38 and kds. Pre-heat works OK though I almost started a fire! Bloody clutch seems to have lost pressure but there are no signs of a leak and it was bled a few weeks back?

Clutch on my 4236 was that bloody heavy made my leg ache driving in town! put a servo on it in the end, did same on austin maxi I use to run.
 
Are you confuse about the size of battery? Don't you have an idea about which size of battery you should choose then i am going to suggest you to buy a small size battery because it will take small space either if you are using it for you ups or your car.
 
At least 11 years since this thread started so if his car hasn't started by now it never will. I don't think a 65 amp hr battery will last long on a 3.8L Perkins though.
 
I finished the restoration on it in 2011, ended up swapping out the 200tdi from my disco. The Perkins went for export, gearbox went for classic jag racing and made more than I paid for the RR and restoration costs! I couldn't live with it being so agricultural and also realised I had no use for the RR once I had finished it! Had a Trooper at the time which gave good service. I did get very good money for the RR and a series 2a thrown in with the deal, started to restore that and then quickly sold on as my spine wasn't up to series ownership anymore. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, should have kept it... Range Rover, not the Series 2a. It made me about £4000 but probably worth double that now? Saw it up for sale a few years back for silly money. Fond memories, family friends had one in mid 70s and us kids would all clamber in the back for trips down to Dorset. I still remember the way it wobbled from side to side.
