Hi guys

I am thinking of buying a petrol RR.

I have upto £16 K to spend but would prefer to spend around 10 - 12. This would allow me to test the vehicle for suitability without losing my house on it.

It would be used mainly local with some motorway and a little off road driving

I have looked at a few ranging 04 to 07 plates, they have varying miles on them and specs. I would prefer the Vogue type Spec as my wife and kids want all the stick on bits.

I need some pointers firstly is there any engine size or years of manafacture to avoid due to problems ? What is the best engines for economy or refinemmnt (not that I am going to get 50 to the gallon) ? What other pitfalls should I look for ? What would you regard as the top mileage to limit potential costly wear and tear etc ?

Suprised how many facelifted ones are out there are they worth looking at or are they likely to be hiding some nasty little secret ?

I suppose I really want a brand new top of the range for nothing but it aint going to happen

Any help appreciated.

IMO avoid 2005/06 if looking at the L322 as that was the changeover period from BMW to Ford, the V8 diesel is the best according to many.
They all go wrong and plenty of niggles, keep at least £3K back for repairs.
Do a site search, lots of info.

Economy is a word you cannot use when asking about petrol RR. Converting to run on gas gives you a bit better economy. But pure petrol running is for the well heeled.

I would recommend 2004/5.
This will have touch screen sat nav and still the BMW V8.

History and something really well maintained..

Get a 2010 onwards 4.4 TDV8
Then you'll want the V8 after you try it ;)

(You'll need to double your budget though lol )

Stick to pre 2006 if you want to gas it. Later cars are Jaguar based and dont like Gas.
Most reliable of all is the 4.2 Supercharged versions. All cars are either Vogue SE or Autobiography spec and return around 20 to the gallon with 400bhp. Pre 2006 cars are much cheaper to tax, 56 plates and on are around £500 a year but have much much better interiors, trim, internal setup etc.
Avoid like the plague the 3.6 TDV8 or later diesels - we have a waiting list for those engines!!
Above all check all the fault areas - the engine is usually the least of your worries with all apart from the bigger diesels!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info very useful.

I will be doing some eye spying and looking and a few test drives before deciding.

Keep the comments coming as they are all appreciated.

I agree get pre 56 plate 4.4 ltr V8 gas her up which will cost about £1300 from profess autogas which then cones with a life time warranty..£45 last approx 200 miles ..great truck best one to date .. and there's been a few ..

Have a look at the TDV8. Why?

Better fuel economy
More torque
You don't have to stop for fuel that often

Even the sound is quit nice for a diesel.

I thought the 3.6 and 4.4 tdv8's were good engines, what goes wrong with these?
