I finally got round to doing some more work on the Series last week. I decided to strip down the rear axle so I can get towards a rolling chassis. Anyway I thought the Timken bearings were OK but a closer look after a clean up shows that they are not. Now, the purvayor of quality parts in a blue bag do both for about £15 so I thought that the Timken ones would be about £40ish, boy was I wrong! £107 for the big one and £60 for the smaller one. Almost £330 quid an axle! Thats quite a price difference there and surley there is something in the middle. Its a pre 1980 so Imperial sized bearings. I thought my Jag was a bit expesive on parts! Any suggestions on other brands pretty please. I will ask a mate that does classic british bike restorations if he knows anyone that can get them cheaper.
 
I have used the cheapie (20 quid a corner) ones on my s2, been fine so far.
Not so critical as the defender ones as the series ones run in that grease/oil slop so last well.

You could always pop down to your local bearing factors.
Online try Sinply Bearings, you will need to provide sizes.
 
I've had no problem with the Britpart bearings, just make sure that you pack them with grease (and then add a bit more).
In a previous life I always recommended SKF bearings, no idea how expensive they are but they are one of the best.

Yep deffo gone on one side at least not had a chance to check the other yet. I'll post a pic later on but the outter ring on both has marks in them that you can feel with you finger nail. It's the imperialness of them that makes them expensive.

Not that bad but similar type markings to that photo above. They look really good but on closer inspection it will be one of those jobs that will come back and get you if I reuse the old ones.
 
Wheel bearing numbers in the attached doc do a search using the bearing number.

Simply bearing will supply mail order any bearing you want....you choose the quality.....from cheap made in china...cost pennys.....to European and made in Japan bearings....still at good prices.....nothing like you were quoted.
 
they are literally spitting distance from me, but they are the ones with the timken at £106 each
 
OMG.....Last ones I got were from LR landrover Speke Liverpool....£around £12 each....but maybe 10 years ago.
 
Managed to get some Japanese branded bearings for more reasonable money. £330 per axle for Timken bearings is just daft! I used to drive past Speke Land Rover every day going to pick my parts up from Amtrak.

I have just fitted front wheel bearings to my Series III, they too are the larger internal and smaller external ones and, I believe, are the same as the rear. I got kit from Bearmach (contained both bearings, oil seal, gasket and split pin but --- unlike Britpart --- no grease). I made sure the bearings were well packed with grease (there is a good Britpart YouTube vid with the guy from Car SOS describing the importance and how best to do the packing) and now Series is driving much better.
 
Note to self, when assembling the hub onto the sub axle don't have your fingers rount the back of the hub as you push it on. It makes you go Horlicks! Apart from a flat finger it all went together ok.
