hello!

Im wanting to do an oil and filter change on my defender 90, but im wondering what oil to use? It has a discovery 200tdi 2.5 engine in (i have no idea what year)

Can someone please suggest what oil to use and the quantity

Sorry if im asking a silly question but i want to put the right oil in!!

I have been using 10w x 40 semi synthetic for the last 8 years on my 1990, 200 tdi 110. Seems to work fine for me. Oil and filter change I put in just under 6 liters of oil. I think the Haynes manual say its 5.8 liters.

Brill thanks! Ive gathered anything from 10-20w seems to be okay? Its only done about 100k miles can you advise any places to order online which are reasonably cheap? Id love to find a 6L bottle then haha!!

Anything thinner than 10/40 is going to cause trouble.
Ive used 15/40 and 20/50 for years with zero issues.
No need for syn or semi syn good old mineral will do just fine
Any motor factors will sell it Opie oils, Miller oils, or ebay

10w20 is cats **** and will mean you need a new engine in short order.

Cheapest way to buy it is in 20 or 25 litre drums.

Okay brill thank you :) irl take a look on ebay then, ive heard miller oils are a good choice so irl try and get some of that, irl probably settle in the middle and get 15/40 !
 
We run the 300Tdi's in our D1's on 10W 40 fully synthetic. IMHO fully synthetic is the way forward - it is simply better at lubricating things. IMHO 15W 40 will be absolutely fine too.

It's deffo cheaper per litre in the larger quantities, and worth having some in stock. use a quality filter too - Mahle or some other OEM one - NOT some cheapo "thing". probably a good time to check all the other oils too

Now I may be wrong here but Im led to believe what we call semi or full syn oil is not in fact syn oil at all, but mineral base oil with a syn additive package, true full syn oil is bloody dear.

Oil specs are boring and fascinating at the same time.

To the op if you look at the right hand side of the cylinder head towards the rear you will see a round date code, I know the head might not be original to the engine, but theres a good chance it is.
