Evening all!! Had my Disco (Disco 1 300tdi 3dr) about 6 months now, when i first got it i did the basics, service, EGR blank with a replacement pipe and then got myself a set of General Grabber AT2's. Since then it's been on the back burner and i've not done anything else with it...
Scenario is i've a grand to spend, what do i buy next?? I've been on the mail order 4x4 website and looked at there suspension packages, do i keep my standard wheel size and go for full suspension 2" lift kit with arms, cones, hoses the lot?? Are they any good?? or... Do i get some big tyres on modulars with a basic suspension lift?? If so which are best?? Also advise on snorkels, diff/steering guards etc would be appreciated!! If your wondering about how i use my disco i do a few lanes and frickley when i've the time... Many thanks... Will (Notts)
 
what makes you think you actually need to spend even more money on it ?

how about spending the money on fuel rather than wasting it on shiny things just because you've seen them in the magazines

a grand doesn't get much fuel these days, maybe 15 tanks full

maybe he'd rather have one of those unreliable leccy winches and some massive tyres to look at when it's parked outside his house cos he can't afford to buy fuel

each to their own

He gave you what he considered to be the best advice.:rolleyes:

What do you intend to use your landy for? How much time will it spend offroad compared to onroad? How much experience do you have offroading?

If your landy gets used 80% onroad and only 20% offroad then there's no point in kitting it right up. If you have little or no offroad experience then it's all gonna be wasted money until YOU know what YOU want and you aint gonna know that until you've spent a bit of time offroading.

well i'd start by getting some of that checker plater to cover the bonnet, the inside of yer rear door and the bottom of yer doors - it looks well cool so get as much as you can afford

then you'll need a champion winch, dont worry about it being unreliable most are just for show anyways

.... and an inclinometer is a must have item for any green laner

What do you actually use the car for? Unless you're doing a P&P every weekend, I'd doubt you actually need more goodies...

If you really want to spend your money, look at servicing your motor and maybe some extra protection and recovery stuff
 
Many thanks Ratty... As i said before have done some lanes and the frickley days but your right it is probably 80% road 20% off road, what i've noticed tho is i'm gettin stuck alot and its more of a clearance issue than driver error... What about a snorkel any point??

Getting stuck due to lack of clearance is driver error mate, choosing your lines and knowing what you can get through is all part of the skill.

What are you having trouble with re. clearance... The only thing sussie lifting gains is approach/departure angles, owt else you need bigger tyres

What size and type of tyres do you currently have on your landy?

It sounds like it may be worth spending some money on a set of 235/85/16 mud or all terrain tyres.

If you spend some time wading in fairly deep water than a snorkel may also be a worthwhile mod. Apart from that keep it standard.

I use my landy for work aswell as play. I bought a set of special track tyres for it. Although I love the grip when offroad, The noise on road is loud. They make a hell of a difference to the fuel consumption too. It's all a matter of compromise. I don't think I'll be replacing the tyres with the same again when they wear out.

Just because other people have all the gear on their vehicles it doesn't mean they know how to get the most out of their vehicle. A good driver in a standard landy can often out perform a rubbish driver in a tricked up landy.
