That's a good question, I've seen series 3's with of that year with either or. Mine is a 77 with one door mirror (well two now cos I've added one) but it has holes in the wings for wing mirrors. The trouble is, unless you owned it from new, you don't know what might have been added by previous owners. I reckon wing mirrors were an optional extra. Don't bother putting wing mirrors on cos they are crap, there is a good reason all cars now have door mirrors.

It probably had round mirrors on the wings. Mine did. As already stated though, they are a bit pants!
Unless you are after originality, replace the top hinges with defender ones and fit defender mirrors. Heaps better and they actually allow you to adjust them from the cab as well as see behind you!:D

Door mounted. The kit doesn’t come with the bolts you’ll have to order separate and need to be correct length.

As others say, wing mirrors shake too much. I have door mirrors and one off side wing that is a fold out type for towing which is usefull. i would fit another wing mirror on the near side becuase there is a huge blind spot on a LWB and I've nearly taken out an MX5 that was under my door mirror. In the end it probably comes down to the holes, if there are no holes don't make them, if there are you may as stick a mirror in them.

I bought my S3 new in 75...it came as std with a wing convex plastic mirror on both wings...the holes are still there.

Not sure how I coped with them for a good few years but the where reasonable.

I still have one of the old round heads that I use on my microlight aircraft...so its still coming in handy.

When I got my S3 truck cab 88" (1977) in 2016, it had wing mirrors. They were absolutely useless, so I ordered this from Paddocks:
The mirror kit comes with two mirrors and two hinges. You need two hinge gaskets, four 79221 screws, four MRC2178 nuts and four MRC2762 bolt and nuts. Everything bolts on pretty straightforward, but it might take a bit of adjusting to get the door to sit straight. Looking back, maybe I should have invested in DA1131 Aluminium Door Hinges with stainless steel hinge pins, but the price tag is not very impressive.

It already has door mirrors but there needing replaced. I think I will just get new door mirrors.

Too much vibration to see backwards with mirrors in the wings.you can only see wobbly shapes.
Put them on the door it easier.

Or don't worry what's behind you ;)
Drove my S3 home Thu, all the traffic was in front of me, only vehicle I overtook was an EV in limp home mode . Door mirrors ‍♂️

When I bought mine, it didn't have any mirrors but it did have holes in the wings so I fitted wing mirrors, they are absolute rubbish, no wonder they started to disappear in the 70's.

Late into this post. What door hinges do you have? I had a ‘75 SWB half a lifetime ago and it had Wong mirrors rather than door mounted. I think it’s an open point. Personally I think door mounted is better from a practical side.

I have two door hinge mirrors (1970) and a single drivers side wing mirror as this has the flip over meach for seeing past a trailer. It came that way and I was going to junk it them I saw what it did so its got a new lease of life. The door mirrors are most useable but the wing mirror covers the blind spot alongside (its a LWB).
