Beginner question- what is this behind the gear stick in the picture?

So it does the job of the accelerator? What is the advantage of it, and how does it work when you also have an accelerator, does one override the other?

Not exactly. Its a hand throttle, so you can set a steady rev for PTO or auxiliary work. same as on a farm tractor.

Some vehicles had the handle even if they dont have the equipment.

Yes set it at lowest possible setting and leave it. It isnt used with the vehicle in motion.

I know a farmer who uses his in motion....But then again he does get out and climb into the bed to throw the animal feed out as it is going across the field.

Cheers

Hand throttle . I found it useful to increase tick over when crawling through mud etc.

That isnt really recommended practice, but I get off the trac and spread off a rear spike, even worse! :D

I was trying to keep it simple! ;) There are in fact uses in motion, but very rarely used now, I would think.

Usually they were used statioanry vehicle driving a sawbench or whatever! :)

Great, I can see those agricultural uses. In principle on a long straight road can it do the job of cruise control :) And whilst I probably wouldn't need to, can I adjust it in motion? I notice the accelerator moves to match it so presumably it's just literally another way of using the peddle?

True, Did we not discuss this on another thread the other day, regarding getting out of a tractor while it is running??
Tractor tyres tend to make a squidgy mess of humans. One of my Fathers friends died that way, he was spreading fertiliser with narrow tyres on his tractor.o_O

Cheers

In theory yes, but might not be the easiest of things to disengage in an emergency.....certainly not something I would recommend you did.

Cheers

I dont think it revs it up enough for cruise control. And it would be extremely dangerous, and probably illegal.

It can but don't. The peddles are easier.

While since I had one, but my memory is it only revs it up to about 2000rpm, about what you want for PTO use. For series on the open road, you wan all the revs you can get!:D

Could be wrong but it would be dangerous in either case.
