So do you not have a main beam? Or is it on main beam permanently?

I don't understand, dim-dip has no affect on dipped or high beam when they are switched on, ie lights switch from side to main..

Then I don't understand, my mistake. What does dim-dip do? I thought it was switching from main to dipped beam.

It was a feature which came about due to a misunderstanding of EU legislation.

What happens is that when you turn your side lights on, the dipped beam comes on as well but at a reduced intensity.

As soon as your turn the headlights on they revert to normal operation.
 
Okay, with the side lights on as soon as the engine is started a low current supply is supplied to the headlamps bulb dip filament giving a light output of "something" like 30% of the dips beam light output, so with only 30% power the light is a dim although bright enough to fulfill the dim-dip function.
Lots of UK cars had it in the mid 1980-90s.

Never quite got the feature myself... its one of those things that I could only put down to "if your sidelight bulbs fail" ... ;)
 
UK Government idea to stop people driving about on just sidelights. As soon as the ignition is on as well as the sidelights the headlights come on at reduced power. Is it not a failure point for the MOT if it does not work?
It is not required in a lot of mainland Europe so I don't think it is the EU's idea.

I said it was a misunderstanding of an EU regulation, not an actual EU regulation. Although there are a number of EU countries that have permanent non-switchable dipped headlights.

It's a bit like when LR mucked about with two styles of tail lights on Disco TDI 300. Again a misunderstanding of what the EU regulation was asking for.
