looks like a 2.5 N/A fitted with a turbo

That’s what Landrover said too...

Pos oil coming from the rocker bolts, filler cap and rocker cover are not particularly good indications of worn piston rings, when the engine is running there is oil flying about in there from the oil system. A badly fitting cap and bad gaskets would cause this - a lot of people could be worried by that statement.

its a 19j td.....oil blowin around is usually due to the crap breathing setup by land rover, you,ll find it in ya air filter un all sorts a places..other nastys involve cracked blocks(internal) cracked pistons to name but 2

I withdraw that statement then, cheers Disco. The good ole' thumb over oil dipstick tube should be a good indication though shouldn't it. Another thing that you can try is removing the oil filler cap and then resting it over the filler hole so that there's a small gap. If there's a load of oily air being blown out, then that shows excessive wear in the rings too because the compression is being forced down past the rings, into the sump and back up into the rocker.

JCF1 - I'll have a go at writing you a walkthrough with some pictures (not my own - dunnot have any) this weekend if I get chance.

Cheers pos - that would be great. My main concern at the moment is replacing the rotten door pillars though. Watch this space for a thread about those woes pretty soon.
