Simple answer is there isn't one.

everyone has an opinion.

For me it would have to be the Range Rover Classic specifically my Plymouth blue 3.9 Vogue manual that fooker would go like stink it regularly saw 100mph.
And it and all other RRC are the best looking cars ever ;)

and if you are looking specifically at Proper land rovers i would say my SII safari was hard to beat.
But like all LRs it always fell apart.

However It was very capable off road and quite easy to fix when it did go wrong.

plus it looked the part.

Best Land Rover? Tricky question.
I like 110 Defenders (obviously) but if I see a nicely restored Series... The modern Range Rover products are very clever and capable but visually look a bit too slick, not rugged looking enough.

As above. It depends what your requirements are. My rough looking series 3 lwb station wagon is great for everything except comfort, economy, reliability, speed, steering, impressing neighbours, staying warm in winter or cool in summer, keeping its oil in the engine and gearbox and back axle. I love it. I have a freelander for doing those things. For the price, the freelander is the best landrover they built.

best land rover ever? the first one made way back when full stop because it was the start of a very long journey to create many very good British made products (not necessarily reliable), the best is of course in the eye of the owner, end of

You are all sadly misguided, those Series stuff and Deaf-enders were just practice runs for getting it right with the RRC and the P38.
Then it all went tits-up with the gaylander's and everything that followed. ;)

I think you might have a point funrover. When the RRC was new, what 4wd could better it ?
When I was a kid if I saw one it was a wow moment.
