I have Series 2 1960 Land rover and when we bought it last week at an auction I realised that despite it being listed as a petrol it in fact had a diesel engine in it. It was sold as a non runner but after buying it and a bit of tinkering for 5 minutes I had it started. It's going to be a restoration project which I have already started and is going well. As I have the engine out I have decided to give it a rebuild but am a little perplexed as to what engine it is.
I have posted a picture for you here

The number on the head is HRC 1479
Numbers on the block are:
HRC 1590
15J01294C
14L5
88UE H

I have looked around and the closest I can match it to is one out of a Land Rover Ninety ! The pictures match really well.

If anyone could help as need to order some parts for it.

Also if anyone fancies a giggle, after taking off the tub and looking between the rear axle and the chassis on the O/S I found this :)

Hi Scott
Thats a bit of a mix you have there!
The diesel seems to have a viscous fan on it!
I cant say too much other that to say Ive never seen leaf springs and coils before!!
Looks like the chassis has had some repair work!
Have you found a chassis number yet, if you have, does it match the V5?
Its not uknown to convert leaf springs to coils, and leave the original leaf springs hangers on, but not the wholes spring!

15j is a 2.5 na diesel. Not a landrover engine, it's a version of the 12j and was fitted to ldv (Sherpa, maybe) vans.

Timing belts for that engine are hard to come by , if you are going to rebuild one the 12J will be a better option , or I believe you can fit the 12J timing case ,gears etc to the 15J.
The 12J pump sits lower so chassis engine mount has to be modified I believe.

I've got the same engine in my Series 3. Have you changed the oil filter? I can't find the right part for this engine. RTC3184 is the right diameter but slightly too long.
