So the male part of the shaft sticking upwards can have 2 types of grooves
One is a groove that is basically a slot that would allow the bolt through with no play
The other is the male shaft has a groove the whole way around meaning that the tightness of the bolt and nut is much higher then on option 1 as it needs to close the splines on the male and female together
Option 1 is I think known as a Disco box and option 2 is the defender box
I seem to remember that the bolt is actually an aluminium bolt and nut so the amount of Nm you can tighten it before stripping is less than the amount of NM applied to a baby's nappy to keep it in place
