To put you in the loop before this all gets surreal, I have twin girls and sleep is something which you either get or you don't. Today I didn't get any.
The story begins. Having spent far too much time looking at landrovers which were looking far from what they were described as, I decided to visit one more. Off I go to see it and this is where it all gets blurry. All I can remember is that the car is a 2002 plate discovery turbo diesel engined manual car. The chap said it has bmw running gear and 5 cylinder engine and said it was a discovery 3 ( i thought it was a 2 due to the date of build). I am confused. I am going to swing down to the place tomorrow to check it out again as I must have been in the twilight zone when all this occurred. Can this really be a discovery 3?

Thanks for that trewey. I'm confused now as the chap kept,on mentioning the BMW engine and running gear and also said it was a td3. I am at a loss. I am wondering if he is getting confused as to the landrover he has mentioned as he has a lot there.

Is that engine a decent engine...and same for the running gear?

discovery 2 td5 is a good vehicle and engine look for rot on chassis especially at rear and ace pipes on rhs chassis rail, but it would sound like he hasnt a clue

Not getting a good feeling from this. I haven't paid the cash over yet but I am beginning to doubt the other things he has said such as it has air suspension. Car looked sound but things like that make me worried.

disco 2 can come with rear air suspension, have a good look underneath chassis rot is a big issue

Indeed you are looking at a Discovery 2 with the 2.5 5 cylinder turbo diesel.
Personally, I would advise a good Discovery 1 300 tdi in preference, or become a traitor and get a Jeep grand cherokee WJ with the Mercedes 2.7 TD engine. Cheaper, faster, more economical and more reliable.

if you are unsure, walk away,or take someone with you who is clued up on disco`s,don`t let your heart rule your head

Thanks. I just get a bad feeling on this one, chap said he could hear the air suspension working which surprises me. I could hear sod all.

you will only hear the compressor faintly whilst it adjusts air springs, for most of the time compressor shouldnt be running if systems good and has no leaks etc, a disco 2 is a very good landy ,barring chassis corrosion any any second hand vehicle issues

That's what I meant. You can hear it when hitching up, etc, and when you lock it up and leave after a few seconds.

hi, standard advice (if in doubt walk away), but prepair yourself- any range rover or discovery or even the baby of the family the freelander is gunna need repair/ replacement parts period unless u buy new vehicle, but the good news is any/all of the problems associated with these vehicles are standard problems, using this forum is a huge help, there is some gr8 advice from some very well informed/ experience people. the land rover family is like marmite- either u love em like i/we all do or u hate em. i have just bought a p38 range rover very cheap because it has issues lol, they are all standard issues, not expensive, and easily doable, if u buy one that has not issues at all then it is one in a million and that just suggests that the usual issues that they all have will bigin very shortly. if u love landies then get it and fix it. simples !!!

Thanks all. I decided to walk away after speaking to the chap again. It was trade and the price was 4k for an 80k mile vehicle. The interior did look battered so that did raise concerns as to whether it had had a hard life. I walked as the chap kept insisting it was a bmw engine and running gear plus said that the rear seats could take full sized child seats. Loads of other little things which just did not seem to make sense. I could be wrong but they were telling me what I wanted to hear.
