Hi all , This is my very first post but have used the site many times .

We recently bought a, 110 county 1985 manuel 5 speed diesel, but reverse has given up the ghost so I was hoping to replace it with another box.
I have worked out I have a LT77 fitted, so can I replace it with any LT77 from a discovery or defender or does it need to be a certain gearbox.
Ashcroft mention long sticks and short sticks ? ( is this the gear stick length ) ? and also serial no's ie 50A (long) and 54A (short) so does that mean I have to match serial no's with the gearbox I have ?

I really hope someone can help please and sorry to sound so dim

Thankyou in advance :D

You have a long stick:eek: There are lots of threads covering this mate but essentially you will need to get a replacement LT77 from a defender. All 4 cylinder 90/110 defenders up to 1993 used it, 300 tdi onwards used a different one. The disco one won't fit as its got a longer bellhousing.

Can you not switch over bell housing from one transmission to the other?

no only pre 300tdi defenders use short bell housings ,lt77 that would fit are 50a and 56a ,early 77s had poor reverse mesh and tend to wear edges off idler teeth and layshaft ,can be firretd with later parts that had better mesh and didnt suffer same problem, long sticks where also fitted to earlt rr but had long bell housing and v8 19mm input shaft as compared to diesel or petrol 4cyl def which has 22mm

DOH ! So the discovery gearbox from a 200TDi that I have been offered is of no use , Only one from a defender ,,, damn :(
thanks for the help AD and james, will have to keep looking
and the question from john would of been what I was going to ask .....
unless I have a 50A or 56A gearbox ... best I crawl back under and find the serial number .

Just found this from diesel jim :
LT77 (or maybe LT85, but pretty difficult to glue those to Tdi's, so i'd suggest LT77)

is the main gearstick closest to the dash, or is the transfer lever closest to the dash?

main stick = defender spec gearbox

transferbox stick = discovery/rangie spec box

and
from Jai Landrover:

LT77 Short bellhousing long stick same as 2.5na/2.5Td/200Tdi's. 90's/110's/early defenders.

So think I have all the answers now ... thanks all very much

depending on where you are I'm sure JamesM could build you a box depend oncost and suitable box if not ashcroft it is

carriage for boxes is about £20-25,funnily enough we are coming over there in august hopefully on holiday,if you can find any old defender 77s i could do you a deal on making a good one for you ,finding core boxes fot defs isnt easy now

no you cant input shaft too long and spigot is only 19mm not 22mm ,yes it could be converted but but at no small cost
