Good evening all,

Finally sourced an air box for my Discovery 200tdi engine in my 110.


Before it arrives I’d like to source the correct air filter for it so could anyone advise as to which engine this air box is from so I know which one to get?


Pics are of the new (2nd hand) air box and the dodgy cone filter that’s fitted currently.


Can’t wait to get rid of the awful induction sound it makes and get it back to how it should be!:D

That filter from a 2.5D or TD will be fine but do not connect the engine breather tube at that position [ inlet side ] on the box as oil vapour from the engine will soon contaminate the element.
Either modify to the tdi position on the outlet side or feed pipe to a catch bottle.

The breather is fine in that position as long as you have a good condition swirl pot (replacements are cheap) and you change the filter at or before the service interval. I have run mine like that you years with no issues. At 6k miles, the side of the filter has a light coating of oil mist but the opposite side is still clean. It is not soaking and dripping as some people claim.
 
Don't know what engine you have dag09 but when I had my 19j it was a hopeless job keeping filter tidy [ worn 19j well known for blowing oil :( ]
Still a poor idea when there is a simple fix of having the inlet like the 200 on the exit side. Cheers, tottot.

Mine was originally a TD which is why I am using the same filter as above and I agree not a good idea for this engine but I now have a disco 200tdi fitted, as does OP based on the picture. To move the inlet requires a different/heavily modified existing air box and is not worth the expense or effort in my opinion based on my experience of my engine. Fitting a catch can leave the engine unsealed so you have risk of contamination if you do any deep wading (which on occasion I do).
 
Sorry for the late reply guys, been working away for 6 weeks and haven't had time to do anything on the Landy but thanks for your help, I've ordered the correct filter and so should be able to fit that soon.
 
A second vote for not using the engine breather on your new filter housing, the military modified their Land Rovers fitted with that style of housing, and vented into the inlet manifold. The 200 and 300 tdi's vent into the inlet after the filter as well.

If I understand correctly what you're saying, you mean don't put the breather pipe on the filter inlet side but on the outlet side after the filter as it will gum up the filter otherwise?
I have a snorkel fitted so I'm going to connect that to the large pipe fitted on the filter housing in the photo and then the outlet to the turbo with the breather fitted where it is now.
Sound okay?
 
I am not 100% familiar with the 200tdi, but if it is the same as a 300tdi, the breather fits between the air filter and the turbo, which eliminates the risk of contaminating the air filter. Mine was a 2.5N/A and had the same filter housing as yours, you can see that the military modified your type of filter housing and removed the breather from in front of the filter and plumbed it into the inlet manifold, i.e. after the filter.
I believe that the military had big problems with the 2.5N/A's engine breather and nearly had a big fall out with Land Rover over it, so much so that Land Rover developed a cyclone type oil separator for it, similar to the ones found on Tdi's.
 
The 200 filter unit does have the breather inlet between the unit and the turbo.
It was found with the military that soldiers in the field were over filling their engines with oil doing their daily checks while not parked on level ground and not giving enough time for the oil to make its way down from the rocker box before checking the dip stick again. There was no problem with series in service as the oil was filled from the pipe on the side which goes straight to the sump.
 
That's really interested stuff about the military guys! Funny that they couldn't check the oil properly :D

I'm trying to figure out a good place to mount the filter housing now as an ideal spot would be where the windscreen washer bottle currently is but I have no idea where to reroute that. Any suggestions?

I also recently fitted a disco 200 as replacement to the 19j. I used the original 3leg air filter but welded a large enough outlet on the top to accommodate a 200 disco plastic outlet elbow which is piped to 300 turbo for ease of exhaust

I also use the original three leg filter as @dangerous Da has and purchased the disco outlet elbow only to find it did not fit. I have a make up of silicone and metal piping to drop down to my disco 200tdi turbo.

Fit one of the underwing washer bottles to give more space, that what I have in mine (pics from google):
