Hello everyone Ive just joined the site. I bought my very first landrover Defender a couple of days ago. All seems to be going well so far. I dont know anything about cars but i am hoping to learn and have started to digest the user manual.
I have already had my first success today fixing the bonnet release mechanism lol.

One problem that i do have is that in the user manual it has different instructions for TD5 engines and non TD5 engines and im not sure what mine is.
I have a 1990 Defender 90 4C SW DT Diesel.

Any ideas?

It's a 4 Cylinder (4C) so won't be a TD5!
Wouldn't be in 1990 anyway.
Probably a 200Tdi.
Has it got discs or drums on the back.
Be warned that a 20 year old Land Rover may have wht would be major changes in other vehicles.
A few photos may help.
If you can find the engone no (don't rely on the V5) just the first 3 or 4 letters and numbers that would tell us.
Oh and :welcome2:

Thanks Dave I found a number under the bonnet although not on the engine itself it starts SALLDVAB. Will get some photos done.

Please wait

ffs.

It's a 4c - that's the 19J, unfortunately notoriously **** engine and probably the worst engine landrover ever put in their defenders - hideously lacking in power and torque, liable to go pop on their own oil, remarkably thirsty and just generally ****. Spend a grand putting in a decent 200 TDi and it will pay for itself within 6 months!

really? wasnt the 19j discontinued after 1989? I have one of the last ones. he prob has a 2ootdi

if it's a 4c then it's a 19J and if it's a 19J then it isn't a defender, it's a 90 (and it CERTAINLY isn;'t a disco!!!) It may of course have an engine transplant already.

4c = 4Cylinder SW = station wagon DT =Diesel Turbo if it's a 1990 it will hopefully have a 200tdi fitted. But that is the changeover year and so could easily have either engine.

Does the rocker cover have grooves on it (like a draining board) and is the oil filler cap a flat cap with a half twist opening/locking action and has it got an intercooler? If so it's a (200tdi and a defender) or a large mushroom push fit cap . and no intercooler if the latter then it's a 19J TD 90.

200tdi looks like this

If it doesn't look like the above and it's a diesel turbo engine then it's the 19J

I never seen a landy injun look like that - even noo ones

this is a landy - it could have anything in it - even a 300 TDi, Shirley?

aye look for the intercooler, looks like a small silverish radiator about 15cm wide on the right hand side of the regular radiator (if yer looking at yer landy straight on)

......and dont call me shirley (snigger)

Thanks for all the advice from your post im certain its a 19J and it has been modified and had an intercooler fitted. This doesnt seem to have been the best of jobs as hose is very close to the fan.
I had my first problem yesterday as when i parked up it was ****ing out water and later what looked like loads of oil and when i looked underneath it seemed that there was loads of oil leaks as it was all over.
Luckily it was just that the radiator hose had a split in it and the black liquid wasn't oil it was just that the water had washed off the wax that had been applied to stop rusting.
Next step is to change the spark plugs. This is a big step for me lol although it looks straight forward in the book! Any tips

Not being nasty, but I am staggered and amazed at how many people buy stuff with having the first clue what they are handing money over for.

Just curious, but did it never occur to you to do some research before buying????:confused::confused::confused:
