Hi guys I've been running mine on 10w30 synthetic local Landy man says it's too new a oil so I will be changing it, anyone else used anything other than 15w40 and did it do any harm ?

15/40 is what you need, try a search loads of posts on this, loads of people for some reason want to run them on cats ****, its a tractor engine so use tractor oil, cheap as well.

The tdi will run on just about anything so long as the viscosity is right, dont worry about the product names just get yourself some cheap turbo diesel oil and change it every 5k and it will be fine.
Next time you go shopping have a look in the car section.
Its only when you get to modern tdi engines with very specific needs for oil that you have to be very careful.

I only ask because I'm getting a bit of blue smoke and wondered if it was the thinner oil making it smoke a bit

Rocker cover off really bright torch and look through all the valve springs to see which if any on the valve guide seals has lifted off its seat, could also be the thinner oil you are using, well worth checking valve clearances when you are in there as dead common for valve lash caps to break, cost pennies, so common worth keeping a couple on the shelf
200TDI always make some sort of smoke no matter what people say theirs does, dirty old things but tough as old boots so long as oil changed often
