Hi
Just been to buy oil for my 2006 Td5 Defender.
I have been told that it is a ford engine .........I thought that it was a BMW lump in there.
Not really bothered but I need to know for the parts if ever I need any
Any ideas ?????

whoever told you this is getting muddled up with the td5 and the newer tdci engines which are ford.

the td5 is a lr designed and built engine only no other stuff in it

Thanks for clearing that up The question was triggered by a guy who sells the oil and associated products for a cross section of vehicles.
He put my reg number in to the computer and it came up with an F on a code which he said it was a Ford engine
He told me that the engine requires 7.2 Litres of oil.
He then said that on another site the engine took 8.2 litres.
I was initially told that it was a BMW engine but I was also told that it was a rover engine design and reworked to suit the defender by somebody else.

I posted the question on the forum to see what response I would get from the knowledgeable folk in the congregation.
Thanks for the input

Both the quantities of oil you've quoted there are correct in these given circumstances:

Td5 engine refill and new filter 7.2 ltrs
Td5 engine from absolutely dry 8.2 ltrs.

These are the quantities given in RAVE, and as almost everyone else has said, the Td5 engine was designed and built by Land Rover, even though LR was owned by BMW at the time. Don't worry it's a misconception of many people (me included) in the past.

We ought to go and run evil over for daring to say that about anyone from Wales.
