That rubbish air intake needs sorting. Recommend fitting a proper air box with paper element using either a defender one or a disco version, you may need to move other items like screen wash unit to do this. Also duct from wing top to heater fan is missing, as is will draw engine fumes into cab, not good.
Yes I agree I think fitting the original air box is the way forward. And it's only missing from the photo as I just removed it to investigate the snorkel.
 
I would use semi-synthetic oil, you can pick it up cheap enough and it will be more tolerant of the heat generated by a turbocharged engine. I use 10-40 in my 300tdi.
 
Yep, you have a disco TDi with a slightly ratty conversion. These are great engines - long lasting and powerful enough for an aging landy. As mentioned above, I'd plan for a timing belt change and start looking on line for a 200tdi disco air filter housing. Have a look at the Glencoyne website for loads of useful info about the conversion. You really want to get that air filter up as high as possible if you're not going to fit the disco one - before the winter arrives!
