OK, I've tried looking and can't find any explanation of my series 3 dash, which is fine as most things make perfect sense. Let's face it, there's not exactly a bewildering array of toys on there.

However one thing has got me stumped and I've been unable to trace it from the back of the dash to make an educated guess.

I've included a picture below.

I know it's not the hazards, which was my first guess, as I have hazards in the middle of the dash. A choke doesn't make sense, not least because it appears to be on and off rather than variable.

So, can anyone clue me in on what seems like it should be blindingly obvious?

Spot lights, fog lights, reversing lights, work lights?

Removed lights?

Check the wire colours. Bet they are red or black :(.
 
Ah! Fog light. I do have one but pulling that doesn't turn it on. So perhaps the bulb has gone. Will go check. Thanks for the suggestions!
 
We had an old series 3 greenhouse ...:)

and there was a toggle switch that used to isolate the ignition ...

and if you were careless going round corners you'd catch it with the sleeve of yer jacket and turn the fecker off ... :mad:

coasting to a stop just as you come off a roundabout is not good fun for a bird driving a big Landy ...:eek:

some of the following drivers were not nice ... :rolleyes:
 
On mine it's where the dash illumination switch sits - but it could be for anything!
 
Well, there's nothing wrong with the fog light bulb and assembly as far as I can see and it definitely doesn't light up when that is pulled. Of course I can't find anything that lights the fog light, so it may just be that the fault lies between the light unit and the switch somewhere :S
 
It should be wired so that the fog light only comes on when the headlights are on too.
 
Dash board on mine but why you would need an indicator that the dash lights are on?
Have you interrior lights?
Or has the dual brake warning/test switch been wired to here?
 
station wagon had a 3 position switch there.
-off
-dash lights
-dash lights and interior light

but the sidelights had to be on for either to work.
 
OK, I've done some more investigation and basically I'm none the wiser.
I have no interior lights, it doesn't light the dash, or any of the other excellent suggestions people have made.
If it does anything, then I'm guessing the bulb has gone for whatever it is.
So, I'm not going to worry about it.

The fog light turns out to be on a different switch.
Which means I did at least solve the mystery of what the other unmarked switch I have does :D
 
Light dawns...
Literally.
It was indeed the interior lights. I had changed the bulbs but hadn't realised there was a bad electrical connection in the light unit itself as well as an isolator switch on the light unit.
Having repaired the wiring and de-isolated the unit it all works swimmingly :)
