Kind of a wierd question i know.
Basically my discovery has quite a few miles under its belt, nearly 150k on a 3.9 V8 1998 model.
Personally i love it, but its getting to a point where the work it needs is starting to make me wonder whether its worth either keeping it for off roading and getting a newer, lower milage Disco 2, or just cutting my losses and part ex'ing / selling it for a disco 2 ( which one depends on finances. )
I'm a huge lover of discovery's, and WILL have another one next.
However i've started getting really into outdoor pursuits other than offroading, in the form of powerkiting, snowboarding, downhill mountain biking etc etc etc where the discovery is perfect in terms of space and comfort whilst travelling.
But, being a 3.9 V8i its a thirsty bugger. I've got two underslung LPG tanks, which admittedly i dont use very often. even with the LPG operational my tank range is pretty poor, which isnt the best when i'm looking at driving to the alps at least twice a year to do some snowboarding, and doing various other continental road trips.
I've always loved the V8. the sound, the smell, the shove etc. But i'm at a stage where i'm half tempted to go for a TD5 model next so i'm not stopping for petrol or gas every couple of hundred miles.
Basically how do you rate your TD5, what tank range and economy do you get, what problems related to having a diesel have you had, other than the belching clouds of oil out the exhaust :D
My LPG system is pretty basic, and i'm sure the 4.0 V8 disco 2's fitted with a higher quality and efficiency LPG system would get much better MPG and tank range, just testing the water really to see whether i could stomach a diesel having had a V8.
 
We had a 1996 tdi discovery before we got a 03 td5, i would say its definatly worth the upgrade. The td5 has a much a better ride, cornering you arnt flung into it with the body roll and it doesnt shake all over the place when going over bumps in the road. Its also better for motorway traveling, its still noisy being a disco but its better than the tdi and can cruse at higher speed easyer. We have a auto box version which gets about 24-26mpg, manual gets about 30mpg. It is lacking in perfomance which you will notice as youv been driving a v8. On ours the catalyic converter went but was under warrenty so wasnt really a problem.
 
Take it youve seen my supa disco earlier on today.... I love it mate hell of a tool. It was registered in dec 99 so its wot just 6 year old and only just done 40000 miles, i think it had been laid up for a while and it aint ever seen hard work till now! However. I get 29MPg out of it, and around 5000 miles on a tank, and a tank cost bout 90 quid at the mo. I've give it a hammering recently coz it was sluggish when i bought it but its loosened up a fair ol bit an she cruises around most of the time at around 65mph. Even started overtaking stuff! an I aint seen any clouds of belching smoke! Only thing with it is that if you are going to overtake, you have to anticipate it well in advance, and drive it properly to get the most out of it! But i like it! hope this is of use to you! Oh and by the way did you tow the combine up hill? coz if if were on the flat it dont count!! Ha!

cheers for the info. i'm quite impressed by your 5000 miles to a 90 quid tank :D thats fooking impressive:D guessing you meant 500, which is more than double what i typically get at the minute. basically i cant be arsed filling up every 2 hours on my way, hence the diesel ideas.
your MPG is almost double mine too :cry:
 
I sold my 300 TDi some time ago with a view to staying away from Land Rovers for a bit. A whole three weeks later I bought a Discovery TD5. Now had it for four and a half years and, have to say, it's well worth the change. Get about 470 miles to a tank, not the 5000 as posted above (I wish...).

I'd get an auto (mine's a manual!) and, if you're not happy with the overall perfomance, chip it. I fitted a dastek around the middle of last year.

I've now done around 92500 miles now (bought it at 22,000).

Yeah well but my hill had ice on so :p ! However, 500 miles, yes thats more realistic, 5000 was a tad optermistic! wouldnt be without it now tho.

yeah it wouldnt stay standard for long, i'd probably map the fuelling myself and stick a bigger more front mounted intercooler on :)
thats one thing i think i will get next, an automatic. my old mans disco 2 is an auto and the gearbox is very nice. my manual one gets on my wick a bit at times. wish i'd got an auto now and then, purely for the linear power delivery :)
