I reckon it was to hold onto when riding in the back lamping rabbits out of. First time we went out shooting in my truck cab we had the ingenious idea of tapping on the roof when we saw a wabbit so the driver knew to stop. The only problem with this is every bump you go over, the bloke riding in the back leaning on the truck cab ends up pushing down on the roof which dints in and make the same noise so the driver hit the brakes resulting in "What the hell you stopped for" followed by "why the hell did you tap!".

Did hear of a reet pair of pillocks riding about on a quad bike shooting rabbits at night. Driving across a ridge and furrow grass field the light only shines up the top of the ridges leaving every thing else in shadow. The last furrow they tried to drive over at about 40mph was actually the dyke at the edge of the field!
