I can never decide what the best option is.

If I give a number that is too high they might actually put up their own price above what it would have been if I'd said nothing.

If I don't give a number they might think they can try and mug me off with a ridiculous price, hoping that I'll think that's the normal one.

If I go too low they'll know I'm lying.

I think it's purely for them to gauge the competition. To drastically alter the policy price after the user entered £1000 instead of £500 would be foolish and they'd soon get caught.

I normally put what i expect to pay.

I normally refuse to tell them. I just say "give me your best price, and if it's the lowest, you'll get the business. You only have one shot at this"

I agree. None of their business what other quotes you've had. Just an excuse to charge you more if they can get away with it...

I tell them the cheapest on confused.com and they ask the insurer and how much you pay in the event of a claim.

Sorry to say its one of those **** things you have to do each year trolling through insurance quotes trying to find the least ripoff

frankly it pains me
:beer2:

Its not so they will bump the price up, the price is decided from a computer model, the trick is the computer will give a price and the team leader will be able to authorize say 5% of discounts over all the policys sold, if its a bit cheaper they will do it to get your business, if its too much its not worth him discounting and they will say he cant match

where insurance companies make their money is referral fees, if lets say lookers ford get the job they will pay the insurance company a referral fee, lookers will bump the price up to cover this fee, this extra cost goes into the figures and so can be used to push up premium costs. Basically were all getting shafted in the end and its not just because of whiplash claims like the insurance companies keep trying to tell us, i bet referrals equal more than whiplash claims by a large amount!!

A friend of mine was told that her insurance was high because it was an older car (1995) and could be stolen easier.

She has just got a newer car (2003) and was told her insurance was higher because it was a newer car.

She is over 50 and hs no convictions and no claims and cant get a quote on her Citroen xsara diesel less than 500 quid

Rip off it is,

Just got a quote from Tesco over 700 quid:eek: 2003 Citroen xsara diesel, (no claims no convictions over 50 years old)

My renewal came through the other week, 630.

I paid 595 last year.

I kicked off, and they fed me the usual bs about all insurance going up.

I then said I'd been quoted by another company (said I didn't have their name to hand) for 460.

They gave it to me for 470.

edit: I didnt speak to any other insurers ;)
