Hi all,
1983 series 3 2.25 petrol engine.
What do you get when buying a new rear engine oil seal?
Seal only? guide?

I am assuming I have a 5 bearing crankshaft. It has a terracotta coloured casting same colour oil filler cap looks like re-inforcing ribs at the base of the block.

My son just wants to buy one and fit it .I want to strip it and double check.
Engine is out.
cheers Peter

Lucky it's a 5 bearing, the rear seals on 3 bearing engines are much more trouble to fit. Your seal should be: ERR2532. Whether you get the guide or not depends on which kit you buy. Paddocks do one: ERR2532G which is an OEM part but it does come in a blue bag, it has the guide. Keep the guide safe and next time you will only need to buy a new seal and "O" ring which you will also need and which goes between flywheel housing and block. Sorry, no part number for that...

Thanks for that
I hope it does come with the guide. no reason why it shouldn't.
cheers Peter

Thanks for all the help guys. I do have the Landrover parts and workshop manuals. But even then some of the part numbers get changed.
And the books dont give links to websites.

There have been issues in recent years with the quality and longevity of even genuine LR seals. I spoke with Turner Engineering and Dunsfold LR - both recommended that I source a Dowty brand seal having had issues with other makes.

Useful info there, thanks. I had a Dowty seal fitted to my 200 engine in my Series 3. I got Glencoyne to fit it at the same time as he did the "mod" to the flywheel housing. Didn't fancy trying to press such a big seal in myself, I don't have a press and didn't want to risk distorting the seal tapping it in with a hammer.
OP should be aware that it is the same seal as fits the 5 bearing 2.25 and the 2.5 engine. Fork out the dosh for a Dowty seal then, Catman, they do come with a guide, I still have mine.

I was reading this from the Turner Engineering page pasted below

The current rear oil seals we supply are manufactured by Trelleborg Sealing Solutions which was forrmerly Dowty Seals Ltd The seals are sourced from Germany and are no longer stamped as Dowty unless old stock.

The problem with the replacement parts is that in a lot of cases they look the same but under detailed analysis are not to the same specification and quality or have the durability of the original Dowty seal.
This type of seal is as used in our own production. A seal failure is time consuming and expensive. £43.14 inc vat

If you don't learn something new everyday, you aren't paying attention. Trelleborg eh? I remember their tyres back in the 70s, popular with the rally community.
£43.14 for the seal?? That's expensive, but probably the wisest course bearing in mind the work needed to replace it.
