hey guys im sat here with my series 3 with 200tdi engine(ithink) hes had a full service and other bits n bobs done this morning and engine is now running sweet.... but.... notice some banging while driving then looked underneith to find the front prop shaft has excessive play so i guess the bearings have gone, i need to get the landy from nottingham to lincoln today back home to mine, and theres only this now getting in the way :( can anyone point me in the right direction as to what i need to stop the propshaft play? is there a bearing kit or something? or is it just a new front prop shaft? or is it a new gearbox? im stuck please help !! thanks in advance

Depends where the play is. If it's in the gearbox drive flange then it could be output bearings or loose flange nut. Ditto the diff flange. On the prop there's the UJs at the end or the splined bit in the middle. UJs can be replaced fairly easily or you can replace the whole propshaft. If it's noisy you can temporarily take the front prop off - you're normally driving in rear wheel only most of the time.

so for now just take the front prop off i thought thats what driven the rear wheels from the engine though? my bad, the play is inside the seal sort or thing on the outside of the gearbox side of the prop shaft, the shaft itself i think (will double check in 2 secs) is fine

here is the leak from the propshaft, is it the NJs that u lot keep going on about??

also can you confirm that on the second picture, the engine i have is a 200tdi engine as daft as it sounds lol

sorry for stretching the forums

??? I don't quite get it. Is it the front prop or not, why would it be driving the rear wheels?

If its the prop going to the front axle then it can be removed as long as you don't want 4 wheel drive.

The picture looks like the diff is leaking, theres nothing in the prop to leak. You sure it's not the diff bearing/seal gone?

its a 200 TDI thats been de - EGR ed and appears to be converted to common rail

as fer the drive shaft can i just ask how many levers yer have in the cab coz its got a 200 tdi engine im wondering if its still got the series gearbox in or has it got the lt77 box in it belonging to the 200tdi engine

if youve got the original series gearbox in with the red and yellow levers then its completely safe n sound to remove the front prop shaft as long as yer only select 2 wheel drive

if its the lt77 box off the disco the engine came out of youll need it to be in diff lock to get movement / drive out of it due to it being permanent 4 wheel drive

there's no common rail system there, i think you're confused

i'm guessing that's a 200tdi engine from a defender looking at the timing chest shape, not sure what the intake/exhaust manifolds are from as i've had VERY little to do with the defenders, i only really recognise the 200/300 disco engines

if you've still got the standard Series gearbox (which is most likely) and all that is making the noise is the front propshaft then all you need to do to drive it home is take the prop' off as the Series is primarily a rear wheel drive vehicle in normal road use

4 wheel drive is only for where you need the extra traction such as mud, snow, ice or climbing over rocky/rough terrain

hope this helps

That photo sure looks like the front diff - is it leaking where the propshaft joins the front axle? If there's play in the flange then the bearings are buggered or the flange nut has come loose. This can happen if it's been reassembled by a numpty who missed out the split pin. New seal is relatively easy, bearings will probably need the diff out, a bit more complicated.
