WURZAL THE LANDY

Active Member
just picked my s3 landy up from the garage last night and told that the valve heads are burnt out and i need a new carb which ties in with the starting probs

i was advised not to spend the money on fixin her by the garage with it being a petrol but he knew of someone selling a diesel s3 with a good engine but rotten chassis and this would be the better option doing an engine swap as doin it myself would cost about the same and i would end up with a more economic and valuable vehicle

so is he talkin a load of cr*p and i should just try and sell and chance my luck on another one or do i go and get this diesel

how hard would it really be to swap he said couple of days in the garage so prob couple of weekends work in it

many thanx
alan

2 guys should be able to do the swap in a day. Or at longest a weekend if you've got the tools. It's a very simple job. But unless he's had the head off I would have thought it highly unlikely that he would know what condition the valves are in. If you've been running on uneaded petrol and the head isn't an unleaded one then it will knacker the valves. I take it you have the 2.5petrol not the v8 you can always flog axles, doors etc off the other S3 and get some money back off it. how much is the S3 going for.

wont the S3 be a 2.25, unless id the 6 cylinder lump? - the 2.5 petrol is a deepender lump - already lead free compatible?

yeah its the 2.25 but i only had it a few weeks and been adding lead additive but was told last guy prob wasnt that and he must have known something wasnt right casue the oil warning lamp was disconected before i took it in to the garage now it stays on all the time

OOOh good point though lots of peeps have upgraded to a 2.5. I scrapped 2 109's a 2 and a 3 and they both had 2.5's in.

yeah - i gottas 2.5 on mine running lead free - if the oil light is on all the time - that aint aything to do with petrol tho.

Get the diesel lump them. then get a twin tank vegoil conversion kit for it.

if yu gonna change the lump - why not sit back and take stock of what yo options are......
doozil 2.5 n/a
doozil 200tdi
doozil 300tdi
v8
plus gazillions of others.

surely its easier to fix the old engine than ripping it out and sticking some other lump and all its gubbins under the bonnet! all sounds a bit drastic!

depends dunnit? if it costs yu a new head, carb and bearings - wots that about £300?

how much duz a 2nd hand 200TDI cost - about £250-300?

option one - still a 2.5 petrol wiv top speed of 65!
option two - a nice torquey doozil which will cruise at 70 all day!

yu tell me wots the best option?

well could prob get the diesel for £150-£200 and since i aint gona be doin hugh motorway miles and its main job is gona be shifting a lot of gear and scouts to and from camps the old s3 diesel engine would do the job not the fastest but hay i didnt buy it to be doin 150mph and it should be a straight enough swap shouldnt it just out and in then the wirin but the suggestion is to swap rather than sell then????

I'd go for the diesel option. but look around you can get 2.5NA diesels for £50/£75.

you talking just the engine like the idea of havin the whole thing there at least you can be sure it runs before its taken out and would that not require a lot more work and adapter plates???

i think the 2.5 na doozil is the same block as the 2.25/2.5 petrol lumps - so it shud just slot straight in;)

if i swap to a s3 diesel engine would i not be able to tell the insurance boys its an s3 diesel but if i change then will it not become modified and as a result higher insurance???

if you keep your eyes on ebay bargins can be had - i've had a couple of carbs for a fiver each - one of which was practically new and a 5 bearing 2.25 with a turners head on for £65, i must stop hoarding the things i buy
