In my oppinion, tyres are deffo the first thing. Winches are an advantage but they make things too easy
. struggle a bit first and you will appreciate it more when you do get one.
Recovery gear i.e. ropes shackles etc. But ensure that they are rated correctly, Ropes breaking can make a real mess and cause serious injury, i've seen it happen..
Recovery points front and rear.
Suspension helps but a Rangie should be pretty good as stock so i would put it further down the list.
Is it petrol or diesel??, reason for asking is waterproofing.
If you intend on going in water a snorkel can be a good idea, as can axel breathers.
A must is steering and sump protection.
Bear in mind that this is only my oppinion but i do claim to be a know it all

In the way of tyres, some people have said to me to go for a set of cheap steel wheel (like a set of 8 spoke) with remould tyres, Grizzly Claws have been recommended by some. know of any other decent tyres? It's going to be used mainly for mud woth some rocks and sand.
With regards to the engine, its the petrol version. I supose the first thing to get is a snorkel?

Tyre wise, the Grizzly by Bronco are fine ,to the best of my knowlege, infact Cruisermik had some Bronco mud tyres on his Cruiser so he will tell you.
If its a petrol i would Certainly think of a raised air intake, And try to make the Dizzy cap and leads as waterproof as possible, An old pop bottle over the dizzy is a good trick, and silicone grease on the leads helps loads.
I have been to many an offroad day and seen endless petrol Landy's being pulled around attempting to get them started due to water.
As for recovery equipment , highlift jacks are good, but make sure you have somewhere that you can use it first! I own a Disco and there is nowhere to jack off untill i get some sliders. :-(

Hy Minimods.
There is only one consideration when wondering what to buy first, it's--------- tyres.
You don't even need the wheels, unless you want to go posing on the high street. Do yourself a favour though, take a mate with a 4w.d. and go off-road as you are. It doesn't have to be anywhere severe, just a farmers field with a bit of a slope will do. Pick a nice wet day when it is raining, not a problem in this country, and note how you go on street tyres.
When you have had the MUD tyres fitted, go back to the same place and check out the difference, 'nuff said.
I stress MUD tyres. there is no place on an off road vehicle in this country for All Terrains or any other crap like that, with the possible exception of sand !!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't live in Southport by any chance do you ?
If it's an off-road vehicle, go for the most aggressive mud tyre you can afford / find, make sure it has a good open tread pattern with good self cleaning ability.
I've had a set of Bronco 'Dirt Devils on my Land Cruiser for some time now and I can't fault them off-road. On the blacktop, it's a different story, they are noisy, and will take about 10 m.p.h. off your top speed. I've also had trouble with them splitting and seperating, but I have to say that Bronco have been great about it, and have re-placed any which have gone bad without any quibble at all. But it can still be a pain when you don't live on their doorstep.

Hmmm thats a difficult one.
Wide tyres can help to float and obviously have more surface area. But narrow ones cut through the slime and bite into the hard stuff underneath..
You will find that you have a wider range of tyres for a 15", i speak from experience, i have 15" aftermarket alloys on mine, i need new tyres and to be honest i was going to change to some standard 16". Purely because the choice of tyre sizes on a Disco is seriously limeted. On the RR i don't think its a problem. When i looked for tyres i found that the 15" where cheaper too. If a set of wheels and tyres came up i wold consider changing.

These are 31x10.50x15 Dirt diggers on standard Land Cruiser wheels. This is about as big as you can go on a cruiser without suspension or body mods.
