What machine polisher are you using? And what pads and compound?

iv had the polisher sitting here for ages with the intention of doing my works van got half of the van done then decided to turn it on the p38

Silverline 1200W Sander Polisher 180mm 230V | Toolstation

Polishing Sponge 150mm White | Toolstation

Polishing Sponge 150mm Blue | Toolstation

Polishing Sponge 150mm Red | Toolstation

and im using Meguiar's Ultimate Compound

so far just the white pad works a treat its removed the swirls with ease

if any of you fancy giving it a go some simple steps to follow

1. soak the car with the hose
2. wash it using a sponge and washing up liquid yes washing up liquid as this will break down and remove any polish/wax you have on the car
3.wash it again with a microfibre wash mit and a decent car shampo, use the 2 bucket method 1 bucket with the hot saopy car shampo in and another with clean cold water rinse off the mit every time before dipping into the hot soapy water.
4. rinse rinse rinse with the hose, now the cars clean
5. clay bar the whole car it makes a huge difference
6. wash again and rinse
7. dry the car
8. now your ready to start using the polisher and remove years of swirl marks

thats my method and it works well il get a 50/50 tomorrow on the rear quarter panel

That's exactly the same equipment I used to use - all of my stuff was 'borrowed' though so haven't seen it for a good few years.
