Rave also lists the correct end-float 0.05 to 0.035 is that you're aiming at Bolt the camshaft gear up tight and recheck the end float,

thing is that the thrust plate should be the same thickness as the groove it sits in on the camshaft. If both have grooves of the same thickness then it still points towards the thrust plate being too thin.
It does.. but you can't get different thickness plates, can you? It's already together, need it for Friday, not sure what my options are :(
 
Silly.. stupid question, which way round does the thrust plate go?
I put it in with the flat side to the engine, bolts in the recess

The gems/thor has a "horseshoe" retainer which runs in a groove in the (much shorter) cam nose.

The cam is normally held back by the tappets which are angled very slightly towards the rear of the engine. in some circumstances under a trailing load when the load is suddenly removed from the tappets, they can angle towards the front of the engine allowing the camshaft to slide forwards. At this point, the cam can more forward with interesting results, on earlier engines a Cam button is fitted,

Think you're right, only goes one way. The face to the cam is flat, both the old one and the new one.

Seem to recall i had a similar issue the last cam i changed, but resolved it, can't remember how!! I didn't need a new thrust plate though

You'll find a way ;)

Cam retaining plates only come in one size 2 different styles though, the early one on the pre serp motors was round IIRC and the later one is horse shoe shaped.;)

Attach a suitable DTI to front of cylinder block
Make sure the chain is fitted

Push camshaft rearwards and zero gauge.
Using camshaft gear, pull camshaft
forwards and note end-float reading on gauge.
End-float = 0.05 to 0.35 mm (0.002 to 0.014 in)

Just remembered!! When you put the thrust plate in place, there's loads of float
When you put the gear on and tighten the nut, there's muuuuch less. Didn't measure it though.

Bigger issue, i don't recall if i torqued the thrust plate :eek:

Grrr!! :p

Yes you check the end float with the cam chain/gears attached! ;) :D

As for the thrust plate bolts I just do them up tight no need to crank them up too much though :D

I have to torque most things or i end up doing too tight and breaking something, or too loose and things fall off.
I'm working on the basis only a clown would forget to do it :rolleyes:
 
By that time we were in a clearing in the sunshine.

It is too early in the morning to be thinking about that! Bix has always said we should just drop the tailgate for some er.. cuddle room but I'd be constantly paranoid that would be the time the tailgate snaps :confused: I wouldn't want to explain that to A&E...
 
Slept on it and decided i need to check the camshaft thrust plate was tightened up!! Hopefully 'just' sump and front cover off!! Slide gear forward slightly to get a spanner on
