Hi there was wondering if anyone could shed me some light.
I have acquired a 1989 Defender 90
and was wondering which model it actually is?
The log book states 90 4C SW DT Diesel 2495cc
I am presuming it is the 200tdi
Is this correct?
Any help much appreciated.

89 should be a 19j 2.5 TD from new with that description - many have had them swapped.

does it have a red block/oil covered and a smooth rocker cover

or a ribbed silver rocker cover

check engine serial number for confirmation.

On four cylinder engines, the engine number is stamped on a flat area just forward of and below the front exhaust port, between the exhaust manifold and the water pump housing

it will start - 19j if its 2.5TD - 11j if its a defender 200tdi and 12 or 13L if its a disco 200tdi.

oh and its not a defender - its a ninety. Defenders didnt start till late 1990 with the introduction of the 200tdi engine and a few other differences although many are shared with late ninetys/110s such as push button doors and painted cappings

Well I have tried to locate the engine number to no avail!
I have looked infront of the exhaust port and cannot see anything there.
There is a flat section there but cannot make anything out.
Any how I have removed the transfer case as this is making all sorts of noises and the gearbox too as the output splines are completely shot.
I have got the numbers from the side of the gearbox which are 50A0327106F
I need to find a replacement for both boxs!
Can anyone identify which code box I have from this reference number?

are you trying to figure out what engine you have in it?

if so, just take a pic of under the bonnet and post it on here :)

Pls see attached photos

Any ideas on the gearbox codes?
If it helps it is a five speed with reverse next to 1st gear

not the code (apart from it being an F, rest is a serial i think), but it's a lt230 transfer and a lt77 gearbox.

lt230's come in various ratio's 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6. 1.4 is the normal defender, 1.6 is for more low end (less top - useful for large tyres) and the 1.2 is from a disco to give better top end.

btw, you can pick both up second hand all over the shop or you can get them reconditioned... depending on budget and what you want.

i think jamesmartin on here recons them.

or if you want to upgrade the engine, you can buy a disco 200tdi (or 300tdi with more work) and drop the engine, gearbox(r380) and transfer in.

Sorry for the dumbness off this.
Would this setup on eBay be ok for me?
Item number 351221208324
The bell housing looks a lot longer to me.

Could you please let me know how to identify the different ratio cases?

what is the serial number ? you can tell ratio of t/box by looking at intermediate gear cluster, if the teeth on the rear most and center gears are the same height its 1.222, if rear teeth only reach half way up center teeth its 1.410 and if rear teeth finish at start of center set it 1.667

So let me get this straight
The lt230 is completely interchangeable for my application with a choice of ratios. however the lt77 comes in different lengths?
Or can the bell housing just be changed?
Would the Input shaft be the correct length?
Are the speedo drives all the same too?

james will know better than me, but afaik the disco box is longer. has a longer input shaft and bellhousing.. also the sticks are in the wrong position. fender has the diff on the rear, disco up front

yup you can swap lt230s

speedo drives are the same. some use cable and other electronics. but you can lever them out and swap.

disco lt77 is longer and isnt easily converted to defender

speedo size varies by tyre size
