I have an option to have a Cummins Engine for my Defender project, I was thinking of a 6BT Mechanical or should I go for a newer Electronic Engine such as a 4 Cylinder Euro 3 or newer ?

Gear box ZF 5-42.
 
I'm putting a ve pump 6bt in my project.
Nice and simple to fix and repair is my thoughts and no electronics to f*ck about with.

Plus they seem cheaper than the others.
But if I remember right, Aren't you a test engineer at cummins?
So is your engine and bits on the cheap :p
 
Yes we've our 50th anniversary next year so hoping to get something sorted out, have you any details on the springs you're using with the extra weight ?
 
May I ask how much a Cummins engine conversion costs? Minus the cost of the engine. Would love to do it. I did search but couldn't find an answer.

I'm just sticking some standard height HD springs on.
Which if I remember are just rear springs fitted to the front.
If I can avoid a lift, Then I will.

That's the thing, Their isn't really an answer.
I searched as well, Before I started mine.
Everyone has different ways of doing things, Be it cheaper or more expensive.

How much can you do yourself?
For me I'm doing everything myself apart from the gearbox/transfer box adapter.

It hasn't cost me anymore than I thought it would.
But the amount of stuff needed seems to be never ending.
The biggest thing seems to be the amount of different sized hoses and fittings needed.
Not much matches up to the lr stuff so you end up needing compression fittings, Hosetails, reducers, bsp adaptors etc.
Plus stuff like a Starter and alternator which aren't the cheapest if you buy new.
If I come in at under £1500 I'll be happy. (Including the engine that is though) Although i recon it'll be £1200-1300 when it's done and sold the bits I don't need off the engine.
If you want more info, Give us a shout and I'll try and break it down a bit.

Cheers aaron. Was looking for a ball park figure. I was planning on putting a 2.5n/a engine in till I saved up the funds for a 6bt. Currently it has a 2.5td with 212k miles.

It was a full rebuild to start with, Which I finished.
Bought another project and planned to put a 6bt in it.
Then changed my mind and decided to put it in the above.

So if you only want to 6bt install only then probably page 60ish onwards :)

I've heard of people using the 4bt engine but I don't know how easy it would be to find an engine or if it would be easier to install. Would certainly be lighter..
 
If I was to do another I would use a 4cylinder euro 4 job as its powerful and wont make the front axle illegally overweight:p
as for pipes and fittings its simple with no fancy threads except on the clutch air assist cylinder and Id put a external hydraulic relief valve in if using the truck power steering pump as the flow and pressure is more than the lr steering box should be subjected to
The power steering pipes can be adapted together by silver soldering a adapter together or screwcutting the odd ball lr thread

A company called coil springs in sheffield will make the springs in any spec you want for sensible money
 
I forgot to say tyhat I somewhere have the dies to make one piece silicon rad hoses:D
I also made different lower rad pipe housing on the cummins to move the pipe and match rad output diameter

6bt fits fine ;)
Theirs plenty about, Whereas their isn't many 4bts about.
Would still be a nice engine to have, Provided you can find one at sensible money.
 
A 4bt would be a better option if you are using the vehicle off road, the 6bt is a beast but its about 3 times heavier or so than a tdi. Only thing is, 4bt seem super rare.

I put a fourlitre leyland 4cyl diesel in a 109 years ago , it pulled OK but you always felt the extra front end weight . Does a 6bt not overload the front axle , with consequent legality risks ?

I wouldn't dare put a 6bt over anything less than a Salisbury axle. As for the legality I have no idea.
 
Newer 4 cylinder engine maybe at 750lbs in weight 4.5 litre ? Electronic so a little more to sort out such as throttle.

Anyone ever weighed a defender with a 6bt , as it must be not far short of 500kg lump ?
My 6x6 cummins with a steel flat bed weighs 2700kg which is the same as a d3 or less than some standard 110s I've had in with too much bolt on **** which land rover types like subjecting their motors to

For A sensible conversion without being scared of vosa four pot is the way to go and truck comman rail isn't unreliable like car junk
