Hello everybody, I am new to the site and I am enquiring if anyone can recommend which are the best aftermarket speakers to fit my 300tdi as the sound from the fitted speakers appears quite poor.

Take a loudspeaker out and take it to a ICE shop (Halfords if u must) and match the size, depth and power then listen to different makes and pick the one that sounds ok for you, loudspeakers don't all sound the same. Then go and buy what you have chosen on the web and save a few bob.

Bang on mate, but maybe should read "if you are desperate to pay nearly double because you are impatient".

Honestly, look at Halfords find some speakers you like, take the make and model number and then look around other audio shops or on t'internet you'll see what I mean. Sometime nearly double the price, same for headsets. Not Halfords bashing buy the way, I give them lots of my money but they are deffo not cheap in the audio department.

The speakers in my 98 300Tdi Disco GS are 5.25" in the front door and rear pillars and a pair of useless 'bass speakers' in the rear door. I replaced the speakers in the doors and rear pillars with some nice Alpines of the same size but the speakers just aren't big enough to fill the vehicle, especially if on the move. It improved the sound, and it's deinitly clearer but one moving you have to turn it up and there is not really much definition to it.

I'm planning on doing some cutting and squeezing to get a pair of deecent 6.5" in the front (an maybe tweeter somewhere) and a pair of 6x9's in the rear pillars and nothing in the rear door.

to be honest there isnt that much difference in speaker quality below 6" speakers, they all sound pretty similar but there all a massive improvement over standard. im currently running Kenwoods up front and Alpine in the rear, and they both sound exactly the same and cost the same and look about the same.

do also bear in mind tho that the whole stereo system is made to a budget and not to produce great sound - if you really want to improve the sound you hear then upgrade the head unit aswell, this will give a bigger improvement than changing speakers but will cost more.

Deffo agree with this, I don't like to go overboard on a stereo, they can cost HUNDREDS but I normally drop £150-£200 on a head unit and it does make such a difference. But I really do want to bang in the bigger speakers but I have a lot more things that need that money before I can so for now I'll just have to turn the volume up to hear anything

i fitted a sony cd player and sony xplode speakers in my discovery and cheap speakers in the rear door and the sound is brilliant.
im especially impressed with the rear door speakers cos they even had the threaded hole in the back of the speaker to bolt the land rover amp to

Thanks for all the responses, the head unit I have is a Kenwood so I think its just the speakers which want replacing.
I have 2 Sony e-xplod 6x9 speakers which I was going to fit in the back but they wont fit the cut outs. So will have to source others.

Depending on how far you want to go,fit a small external amp, hide it somewhere (in the glove box, under the seat, in the boot etc) and get some decent make same size speakers, sony, pioneer, jamo etc depending on your personal preferences -some speakers cater more for specific types of music - ie jamos great for dance music (leftfield, chemical brothers etc) but useless for rock/pop tunes (oasis, kaiser chiefs etc). quite cheaply You will find that your music is greatly improved and is a lot clearer and richer, and everthing will still look factory.

Or just get yourself some good old 6X9s, a nice improvement in sound for what they are.

Ps get some good oxygen free cable aswel. (good head unit, good connections + good speakers= good quality sound).

Like i said at the the beginning it depends on how far you want to go, and to what level you want to listen to your music, some people want the whole Dolby true digital surround sound 7.1 experience, others just want to hear noise from thier radio.
