I was in the same situation and paid £16k for an 03 plate Vogue, loved it....then paid £9k in as many months to try and keep it on the road!


Think you can get lucky or unlucky with range rovers
Sounds like you got a bad one ! Lol
 
Bad? try catastrophic!

Gear box went twice
2 wing mirrors
front parking sensors
rear parking sensors
3 injectors went at seperate times and had to be dug out
Pixels on the dash all went...twice
bushes for the front and rear suspension had to be replaced
brake caliper fell apart

To top it all of the "specialist" I bought it from sold it for me and before giving me all my money back went bankrupt!!

Admittedly I didnt know what I was looking for when I bought it but all these problems started about 6 weeks after buying it...anyway, have had 3 other Landys since :)

The late p38's were still more troublesome then the early l322 is
Obviously gave up on the p38 and started on the l322

Rubbish Rubbish Rubbish. Early L322's are just as much trouble as late P38's and the trouble is always more expensive:p

Indeed, I'm not aware of any mandatory recall work on late P38s to stop the front diff exploding.

Just the engines overheat instead and go bang !
A p38 owner is never going to admit that there worse than l322's ! Lol
 
I do have to say, at times I have to think twice about posting questions on the L322 in fear of reprisal and then entering into the L322/P38 reliabiltiy argument

In my experiance of 6 Rangies (2 Classics, 3 P38s and an L322) over the last 15 years, the Classics were the more reliable, but the P38 and the L322 are just as unreliable as eachother - only difference is the repair bill....

Even then the mechanical parts ain't too bad - New Hella Rad on the L322 - £136, Thermostat £46, ABS Sensor £17 etc etc....

P38 V8 Rad £80, P38 V8 Stat - £15, ABS Sensor - for some unkown reason Island have them at £66..!!!

So fairly comparable, it is the electronic gubbins that bite - Alternator £400+...!!!

You obviously missed the fact that Saint's L322 is overheating. All engines go bang if allowed to overheat on a regular basis.
The M51 is no more prone to problems than the TD6.
Looking at your past threads you have had a fair amount of trouble with your L322, cannabis causes amnesia:rolleyes:

Seems to always be the petrols that overheat !

Mines only had some small niggley problems as you know we all have to experience

I had a patrol 290,000 when i bought it went all around Australia towing a van 28,000 trip.I then got another 8 years out of it,why I got rid of it i'll never know.I then bought a Landrover discovery 1 I've never had so much trouble with a vehicle to put it lightly a heap of **** and I'll never get caught again. If Lucas and Bosch are responible for the electrics they should be ashamed to put there name to it.My advice give the landrover a flick and go back to a patrol,built like a brick ****house.

Yes the L322 was an impulse purchase, but I did go and look at a good few of them - and I took a punt....

The problems I have been having are no more than I had in the DSE - just the bills are bit more is all!!

I just don't believe that to be the case, anyhow this isn't a them vs us argument, Most people who like Range Rovers like Range Rovers, I like L322s I just prefer the look of the P38, also we are comparing P38s that are 15 + years old on their 10th owner with 2nd and 3rd owner L322s - see how well the more complex L322 fairs when it's on its 9th owner and hasn't seen a LR dealer for a decade.

The P38 has many well known niggly faults but is very robust and simple to fix - the bodywork and chassis are very well put together, most examples including mine are completely rust free. A looked after P38 is often perfectly reliable. Sadly the L322 doesn't seem as well constructed - I've heard issues with rust on them. When (not if) my P38 blows up and the right L322 turns up I'm, sure I'll buy one to continue the legacy of my scattered RR ownership. But I'll be sad to see the P38 go - I didn't love my classic - owned from two year old - it was far more unreliable than my much older P38 - there are times when I nearly torched it! I look forward to getting into my P38.

Getting back to the thread - would I consider a different "SUV" yes - but it would unlikely be Japanese because they bore me to tears. No soul at all - the only Jap 4x4 I've driven which I actually liked (and I've driven most of 'em) was the Nissan Murano which was really nice to drive - but it's not a proper offroader. I'd probably buy a Merc ML ahead of most Japs and they are even more unreliable than Rangies and often rust like buggery too! I'd also buy a Jeep before any Jap too - pretty reliable these days but the interiors still leave a lot to be desired. Whether it be a P38 or L322 I love to climb aboard a Rangie.
