Can anyone help overcome the problem of a leaky sunshine roof,well two actually, front and back on a Discovery 1

they all do it.
check the drain holes are not blocked up, first.
then run some silicon sealer around the edge and seal it up. then dont open em again.

theres a product that the septics use. for the life of me i cant remember the name of it. someone here will tell us.

Seems to common problem the disco.
i have the same problem, spent most of the weekend trying to find a solution. Then came across this site which gives handy tips from a lot of knowledgeable people:) .
what i have done so far is wiped around the rubber seal (which was really dirty), and parked the disco at slight angle so the water runs off quickly ( worked so far, especially after last nights downpour:D ). I’ve tried to look for these drainage holes in the sunroof but i can't find them (any pointers from anyone would be grate).

On some the plastic drain breaks where the drain tube slips on causing leaks. also the winder To fix properly you must remove the headcloth the glass then the surround. Its a real pain and takes nearly all day to do properly. and no guarantee that it remains watertight for any length of time.----
 
Well, I just opted for the Gaffer Tape 'till the weather gets better and can have a proper go at it. Only my lanky 9" tall mate spotted it!

There are plenty of tips on how to do it. But if anyone could post a 'how to', with photo's I think we'd all like to read it...
 
i had to cure this problem on my front sunroof of the disco, first wipe the rubber seal with some thinners to get it nice and clean, take a trip down to b&q and buy some of that sticky one sided foam/rubber that sits around sinks under the lip to allow movement yet still seal, this tightens up the sunroof when closed and also seals it for good, and its been tested in this ****e weather we have had and had a big water splash over the roof of the disco and not a drip! :) hope this help or gives you all an idea of how to fix it.
 
And while we are on the subject:
Can any one tell me if the front sunroof just pivot opens or should pivot with the option of opening backwards like the rear one,If so any ideas why mine wont open backwards????? Does that make any sense:confused:
 
My front roof opens the same as the rear, both in two stages. there are four small torque type screws fitted through slots in the frame to hold the glass. These allow positioning and they may be loose causing the glass to move about. If this happens it can prevent the mechanism from moving into the right position for the second stage. I know it's simple but is the release button allowing you to rotate the winder?
 
That's the problem the winder wont turn and I dont want to force it in case it comes off in my hand!!
 
I assume it turns ok for you to get it to the tilt so the winder cant be stuck. The problem I think is with the way it carries out the next stage. My front unit was exactly the same when I got it. Fortunately it did go to the next stage with a bit of a clunk until I found that the screws were loose and the glass had moved well out of position. (if for example the glass is too far forward it cannot tilt far enough for the mechanism to get into the right position) If you can get it to tilt up fully you might be able to reposition the glass using small torque spanners (like allan keys) or remove it completely and get into the mechanism. If you study the rear unit you'll see how the slots work the mechanism. try using a thin screwdriver to nurse the pin in the slot and if that doesn't work consider using a small mirror to check the tracks aren't jammed with a small stone etc. Good luck
 
I believe land rovers solution is a complete new unit, retailing at over £300 ! I found a great chap on ebay that sells aftermarket seals that are a copy of the disco 2 seal (slightly thicker), solved our problem straight away, no need to park at jaunty angles !!!!!:D
 
Reading some of the American forums and they seem to have leaking problems with series 1/2/3 disco sunroofs. It seems to be one of their biggest gripes.----BB

ihave the same problem with my disco i read in a lro mag that a seal from a 206 or a 306 seal is the same but cant remember which one but they are only about 12 pound
 
i have got a 95 300tdi. in heavy rain the alpine windows leak. i dont really want to put mastic round it. any ideas?
 
My advice is to bite the bullet. Remove it, clean up, Replace it. Good experience, lots of Vaseline, bit of string. Don't ask where to put it.
 
Hi There,
Just had to re seal my rear sunroof.
1st I cofirmed where it was leaking with the aid of Gaffa tape by tapeing the glass to frame and found water was still getting in so did the frame to roof and that stopped it!

Removed head lining, which wasn't as bad a job as I'd thought it would be (took me just over an hour and a half). Then removed complete sunroof, cleaned all round frame and roof then ran a bead of good quality silicone round and put it all back together again.
You'll need torx bits for the screws that secure the tray to the frame.

Took me about 5 hours in total and you'll need a mate to help you as two pairs of hands are better than one.
