Managed to dodge the rain last night and start stripping, removed the rad and the remaining water, didn't notice any tell-tale signs in the water or oil

**update**

sorry I know it's been a while

as I've managed to find an M51 engine with very low miles but a cracked block I have decided to change over as many parts as possible, last night I managed the timing chains, sprockets and tensioners, my old ones from my 170k+ engine were very worn!
the new tensioner in completely smooth with no indication a chain has been pressing against it. Here is the old one ..

A cracked block is pretty unusual on an M51.

so I've heard, but with less than 20k on the engine, then it was replaced under warranty by Land Rover? who am I to argue?

To be honest, and in my experience, if an engine with such low miles was replaced under warranty it would return the the manufacturer for investigation. Unless it's frost damage, a cracked block is a very unusual thing on this engine. Think someone may be telling you porkies. :);)

Showed me the paperwork, had all the miles on it and was all marked up LR dealer?

wasn't interested in the engine anyway just wanted the FIP still attached to it and so offered to get rid of the lot for him :) means I now have much younger chains tensioners and sprockets on mine. Also a spare set of injectors :D

Check the chains for toothache. If there is ANY at all change them. In the old days they would just have fitted a short motor so the pump head etc would have been fitted to that. These days there is possibly nobody working at the dealers capable of stripping and rebuilding the engine. Times really have changed.

question…

on the FIP
should the woodruff key line up with the dots like the picture below?

the one I've taken off my second engine doesn't like up no matter how many times I rotate it?

Come on for christ sake the dots are in the oil seal they can be put in anywhere.Time the engine locked on TDC number one firing and turn pump CLOCKWISE only until key engages in sprocket and over the two studs with bright link set correctly.
