I need to weld a couple of areas on the chassis of my D1, is 2mm plate thick enough ?

2mm is about right...
If you go any thicker, it will be much stronger (and stiffer) than the original chassis... As the chassis is designed to flex a little, a stiffer patch will not flex to the same extent, thus putting a loading on the weld. I have seen several cracks in various chassis due to a heavy gauge "patch"...and "patch on a patch"

Mine is pretty much made of 2mm

mark - i used bits of old oil tank on mine - think that's 2mm

I have some 2mm plate, a welder, and the week after next off work, time to get busy.
