Hi All,

my '96 4.0 has a tin worm issue in the rear corners. I read in RAVE that as a procedure before welding, the battery should be disconnected, so too the airbags and all sensors and...ALL ECUs.

My question is that, assuming that those who pray at the altar of sticking metal together might not be au fait with the location of every ECU on a RR, is it that imperative that all ECUs are disconnected?
 
To be safe yes, the problem is that there is a chance that the welding current ,may find its way through any circuit connected to the vehicle, this stray current will fry any circuit that is not designed to carry it. It only takes a split second for this to occur.
 
electricity takes the easiest route, so as long as what your welding to and what the clamp is attached to is clean, and the earth isnt at the opposite end of the vehicle to where you're welding, youll be fine
 
Disconnect battery half hour before hand unplug ecu and body ecu and have the earth clean enough to eat off and close as possible to what your welding. Thats what iv always been told

The problem with electric welding is induced currents in wiring adjacent to the weld area, it can be very destructive, that is why it's recommended that you disconnect all ECU's. You take a big risk if you do not do this.
