Sorry in advance for another welding question!

Just a brief one though.

Defender chassis repairs: Arc welder or MIG welder?

I have (well, I borrow it from my work!) an Arc welder and I just can't get a decent weld if I go to vertical or underside welds.

Should I buy a MIG welder? Will it make me happy beyond my wildest dreams?

which rods are you using in the stick set?

Erm...2.5mm dia General purpose is all I know. I went to look at a 2nd hand mig tonight, seller agreed to demo the machine but when I got there he said he didn't have his welding mask with him! He kept showing me how good the wire feed was though...? Guess what? No sale.

Anyway, tomorrow I think I will bite the bullet and buy a new shiny - I can only blame myself then if the welding is crud :)

Do I need to get hot rolled mild steel sheet for chassis fabrication as it's more ductile or will cold rolled be workable enough?

Just to clarify something, both these welders are arc.

Stick or MIG is the difference between them.

MIG is, as James says what you want.

I did an tubular outrigger with 2mm sticks once and made a good neat job of it but I had good clean metal to work with and it was an easy weld in easy positions.

I'd have just hidden behind something and welded blind, would have been fine to maintain an arc and demo it.

Some 1.5 or 2mm multi position rods woulkd have been more suitable for the stick welder 2.5 need too much heat . Some good welding forums on the net.

if you get hold of Bohler fox ohv rods, they are good in all positions, as were the certanium touch rods, no need to tap them to start. With mig they just will not weld rust, so metal has to be clean and sound.
