I did a bit of research on this and for my circumstances the volkzone boc y bottle offer is best deal about. Luckily I have an argon regulator to fit. Ring boc and ask them about the offer its cheap if you are going to be welding a lot. But yes pub co2 or any co2 will do, I just cant get hold of any and boc is near my work so easy.

not sure why CO2 would cause brittle welds, AFAIK the gas is to sheild it from oxidising, CO2 is good at this, Argon better, as a result you need less argon to sheild than you do CO2???
Seeing as a big pub bottle costs me around £11 a fill, and everyone else I know uses CO2 for general work, Ill stick with CO2 unless somone can give me a good reason not to

Tim where do you get the bottles and refills? + how much?

Im on the comittee of a local club, I get the steward to order me one in when hes doing a gas order, if your friendly with a local landlord, they will probably do the same :)

Like I said refills are £11 and most companies dont do bottle deposits any more, but if they do they are usually around £20 a bottle.

We proved the worth of the mixture when the boys did the 109" chassis a few years back, it was so much nicer to use, although having the big 250A MIG welder helped a lot in that respect.

We get full-size Coogar bottles from one of our metalbashers, we pay the rental and for the gas, but a big bottle lasts up to 2 years for what we do. Saves us having an account with Air Products.

Now we have the additional TIG unit we'll probably look at a second bottle, that or arrange a split feed from the existing one.

When the boys were getting the 109" Safari Wagon chassis repaired, they got through a lot of gas and a lot of MIG wire:

That chassis was almost rotten through and through, we got through a lot of 14g new steel to make it good again.

you need pure argon for tig as you need a active gas
i love the term metal basher

Surely the point of argon is it isnt an active gas? chemically speaking it reacts with naff all, being one of the noble gases, presuming with welderficating, it prevents reaction with O2, so make all the heat go into the metal, as apposed to CO2, where a very small amount will break down to Carbon and O2
