Hi guys ive removed my fuel tank because theres a small rust hole in it and my intention is to weld a plate over it..... Ive been readin into the risks involved n how i should do it and ive found alot of contrasting views what do you guys think... Its a diesel tank n i plan on fillin it with water just below where i intend ti weld.... Is this a safe job?

No and in so many ways........... Get a epoxy patch kit for fuel tanks or a new tank. Is your life worth much?

Crazy idea, will only take a very small amount of vapour to creat a very big bang!

I learnt many years ago not to do it whilst I was welding some old oil drums together for a raft, it went bang whilst I was sitting on it, fortuantly the cap was finger tight and it blew that off and expanded both ends outwards, **** me up, never again!

Get a new tank, if theres a hole it will be thin anyway...

Only way to do it would probably be to fill it with fuel neutralisers and leave it to ventilate for a few weeks to be sure but for £80 why take the risk ?

 Not worth the risk, get a new tank! Plus, if it's that bad, there are probably other rust spots about to happen, and with the price of fuel it would end up costing you the price of a new tank anyway.

Also, if you plan on doing anything else you think is a bit 'dodgy', and there isn't a suitable adult around, then you best ask

If it's started rusting get a new tank. Otherwise this will just end in tears and a funeral that we won't be invited to anyway.

All right thanks guys thanks for the advice i realise now that this was probaly a stupid plan from the out set. Ive got the tank out now n had a real good look at it and one side (the holed side) is pretty rusty and papper thin anyway so i guess new tank is required

fiberglass would do it to get you out of a hole (sorry ;) ) or untill you get a new tank, but it is nothing more than a superficial plaster if its rusting through anyway!

Didn't some bloke get frazzled, cutting up a 40gal oildrum. To make a BBQ. Not so long ago. ??

I weld alloy truck tanks regularly but, truck tanks are a lot of money , not £80
and I steam out then purge with argon .

Theres the difference though ;)

You're a professional who knows what he's doing and the risk involved not someone doing it as a weekend repair

Bzzz bzzz bzzz, checks weld, bzz bzz bzz, checks weld, coming along nicely, bzz bzz, checks weld, bzz bzz bang. No face. Its not worth the risk.

Theres not going to be anymore fail videos on youtube if people stop other people from doing stupid things. I say do it and get it on your mobile :flame2: (disclaimer: it was a joke)
