I have a 1988 Land Rover 110 2.5 diesel. The drive shafts & flanges are worn (there is play in all 4 when checking with grease caps off). Has been only 6-8 months since renewal. A few guys advised me to weld the half shaft ends to the drive flanges as this would eliminate the clunk when accelerating/decelerating. Is this a safe option ? or am i asking for even more serious trouble than just worn flanges !

Any help is greately appreciated.

it'll be a good idea to weld them, as you've found out, they wear quickly, on the 90 the shaft and flange are in one piece.

Make sure you use a good high power MIG (at least 180amp), a cheap halfords jobby wont do it.

There was a LR place in South Africa welding half shafts to drive flanges,it aint easy - problems with ensuring good penetration, dissimilar parent metals, accurate alignment during welding and rotating the assembly whilst welding.Cracking of the weld was also common in use.
I think Ashcroft Transmissions here in the UK are doing uprated bits to get round this issue, are they also doing damped drive members to take the shock loadings out of the half shafts?
I suppose the only thing is the worn bits are only destined for scrap anyway - worth a go eh ?

Should i weld the front ones too... will it cause problems to the cv joints when turning etc...

dont weld the front ones because if you ever have to strip it to do front discs or a wheel bearing or something, you'll never get the hub off without cutting the weld off first, then you'll have to buy a cv joint and a flange, the fronts dont wear anyway
