My D2 TD5 developed starting issues in the cold weather. Apparently plenty of life in the battery, it would start straight away but cut out imediately, it was as if there was no fuel. If you cranked it on the key for approx' 6 seconds it would burst into life and be fine for the rest of the day. I started to think it was an air lock of some sort developing over night.
Weird thing is though, as soon as the weather warmed up again the problem disapeared?
Can anyone suggest a cure before it gets cold again? Cheers :confused:

not got any water in your fuel filter have you?

when were your glow plugs last changed?
 
I owuld say check the injector o rings and washers and also the air bleed vale in the fuel filter housing sitting at the wheel its the left hand side front pipe in there £11 from landrover for the part.

Sounds like a similar problem to my TD5
I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas to solve a problem with my 2000 TD5 defender.
This is the most unusual problem ever encountered. I bought the vehicle as a non goer and fitted a reconditioned engine. It runs well as you would expect but if you sit on the drivers seat the engine cuts out. As strange as this may seem it actually happens. When it cuts out the "check engine" light and "glo-plug" light flash. If I connect the Hawkeye scanner it will work fine until you sit on the seat then it looses the data connection. If you start the engine and press and poke at the computer or any of the connections everything is fine and the engine runs well. It's obviously some kind of wiring problem but I have checked all the wiring into the computer for continuity, earth leakage, and short circuits and cannot find any faults. The vehicle also has a new Crank Angle Sensor and all the wiring to it has been checked.Also has new fuel pump. If you want you poltergiest back you welcome.

i had a merc sprinter that ran excellent most of the time but randomly cut out, after much testing and changing parts it was traced to a loose pin on the ecu connecter plug, changed the plug and alls good, yours could be something similar as the vibration from seating on the seat appears to be moving something

I have a feeling that the wiring from the OBD socket may route over to the drivers seat from the middle seat. You could be pinching the wires to the socket when you put weight on the seat.
 
Back to the thread, I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that I've fixed the problem.. My good lady informed me that she could smell diesel at the back of the car. Upon inspection I found the underside soaked in diesel, actually dripping off the tank. The filter area was bone dry so I ran off in panic mode to check the forum.
Following a bit of research and a chat with a very helpful guy at Lakeland LR I shot up to Lakeland LR and bought a new fuel pipe (the green one that goes from the sender and forward alongside the chassis. I dropped the tank an inch or so improve access and found two areas of wear on the old fuel pipe. New pipe fitted in 15 mins and all appears to be well.
Just to keep the challenge ongoing, I've now got the traditional sagging rear suspension. What does it mean if both sides sag together, are they linked or independant? Thanks for your help again..
