Hi,

Feel a bit of a **** asking about this, but its bugging the hell outa me now, and for all I know it could be something someone else has had.

I have a 300Tdi disco, and when braking or accelerating, I hear a sound like a marble rolling down the back of the boot (or back up to the front again), with a kind of metallic "tink" when it hits each end.
I do have kids but even if they did take a marble in there, i cant see anywhere it can roll up and down, the mats are all flush to the boot floor.

Going slightly potty (yes.... at least I have the speakers working now :)

Is it just something peculiar to my old girl ?

Is it definitely the boot ? could it be something around the headlining/roof area ?

It certainly sounds floor level.
I will entertain that theory tho when im next it it, as that does make some sense. Its quite a long roll, like its traveling the entire boot length, I cant imagine any space long enough in there for that.

No, its less random and sounds heavier, never bounces.

Its like its on rails or in a tube

penny stuffed down a rear door window rubber, cos thats what my eldest has done recently, and Ive got a similar sound when braking etc.

meby you have a marbel in the boot :D

Sounds like its under (or on) the boot floor.

It sounds more perfectly round and heavier than a stone, more like a bearing.
Its ALWAYs in the same place too.

I'd put my money on a socket, nut, washer or such left by a mechanic inside the chassis. Can you squirt some Waxoyl or similar in? That should stick whatever it is in one place.

Yeah, a socket would be about the perfect weight for the sound.
Il have a poke about when its stopped snowing

Arseingtons :(

Someone could have put a large ball bearing in the fuel tank?

(oh yes, was a covering of snow in north Dorset this morning, none here in West Dorset thankfully)

I used to know a guy who worked at a repair centre. If he ever had a customer who he took a dislike to, and he needed welding done. He'd put nuts and bolts and things inside seals etc before welding them up. So the owner would get rattle noises that he couldnt find, cos they're inside the panels.

Id like to point out it was making the noise when I bought it ;)
