Hi everyone, as of 3:30pm today i became a proud owner of a 1999 FreeLander 1.8 petrol... 10 months MOT, 6 months Tax and lots of extra's on the car including roof rack, side bars, bull bars with fog lamps etc etc and for 120k miles it is certainly in amazing condition :)

it was advertised for £1250 and after a good look around the car noticing 3 tyres need replacing soon, small tear in seat, front fog/spot lights not working, clutch needs to be adjusted and a very slight lumpy tick over i eventually managed to get it for £900 cash!!! :D very happy to say the least :p

HOWEVER!!!!!!!! driving it home 18 miles, it drove absolutely perfect... i did not take the car above 3500rpm through country roads and small towns & villages... not a problem, i then got on to the M6 only for 2 junctions and 2nd and 4th gear make this horrible grinding and vibrating noise from the centre of the car when i go above 4000rpm!!!!! its almost as if the drive shaft is rubbing on something? thats the best way i could describe it!!!

Is there a common fault i should look for with this? or does anyone have any idea's before i get my hands dirty? im pretty handy with the spanners, i use to fix motorcycles for a living so im still learning aout cars but i am pretty handy with the spanners and not afraid to get stuck in ;)

any help would be appreciated thanks

p.s. any help on how to wire up the front spot lamps would be appreciated aswell  thanks again

Bet the seller couldn't believe his luck. :hysterically_laughi

definitly not... if anything i would rather have a discovery!!!!! i dont like the defenders (sorry defender owners... personal opinion)

i will work my way up 1 day to a discovery beut for now i have my freelander!!!

to be honest with you i know there is not a problem with the rear diff anyway... otherwise it would be making horrible noises when i am driving!!! ive had the rear wheels off the ground today also, spun the wheels and its all as smooth as barry white's voice :)

so realistically i either have an IRD or Gearbox fault!!!
so i am going to purchase the VCU and props cheap from a good friend which we know works and then i will have a look into the IRD or gearbox for the noise :D

Sod it im just going to change the lot!!!!

I will start with the Gearbox, then the IRD/Transfer box, then i will add the props and VCU then if it is masking a problem with the rear diff i will change that!!!

Costly but will all be done and dusted end of the day :)

back to my question before hand... can i only purchase props and VCU from a 1.8 petrol 3 door freelander 1? or can i get them from any freelander 1 for example 5 door and diesel models?

Thanks
if its okay in some gears and not others g/box is the only issue

You're going to replace the whole lot? Wouldn't it just be easier to sell it and spend a bit more on one that works properly? It's no small job ad where will you source the parts? If they are used how will you know they are good?

Best of luck mate but if it were me I'd be driving it to the nearest forecourt and then looking for another.

You mentioned you wanted a Disco anyway, why not look for one? The 300Tdi is cheap to run and tax, and as long as you can find one that isn't too rusty you could look into it :).

i would have gone back to the person who sold it you and told them you have a right under the terms not suitable for perpose and they can be add over it , at least go and have a word, if some one has taken the prop of then there is a problem it could be just the vcu but i doubt it

If they are a trader I think they must refund for 6 months if the vehicle is not fit for purpose. Private sales do not apply to this though. May be wrong on that.

And if it is full of rust you will still be able to look into it :)

right i dont see what the big issue is... the car is solid... no serious rust on the chassis or body... lots of extras fitted and actually in brilliant condition!!!

however 2nd and 4th gear has a grinding noise over 4000rpm so i will replace the gearbox... they dont cost a fortune and i can do it myself, i just anted a little advice on knowing if they are hard to fit on these?
I have replaced the Clutch in my E36 M3 which was an absolute tw*t of a job and i had to replace the gearbox on my wife's Ford Puma 1.7 Racing because the bearings went in it and that box swap was an absolute nightmare!!!!

the rear diff doesnt make any horrible noises so i have bought a VCU and props off a friend who is breaking his FreeLander so thats that sorted and back to 4 wheel drive as of tomorrow!

Ive sorted the lumpy tickover (it needed a set of plugs that cost me a whole £8 lol and i cleaned the throttle body out)

Ive sorted the Spotlamps properly and a few other things here and there.

All the FL needs now is a new battery, a oil change and a set of tyres... thats it really

you have got to remember he wanted £1250 for the car and i got it for £900!!! after all the above i have spent close to £1250 so not a big issue that i had to do these jobs... the only thing its going to cost me extra really is a gearbox!!!

anyway can someone PLEASE give me advice i needed 2 pages ago? lol
will the VCU and Props from a same year, same engine 5 door fit my 3 door FL?
Cheers, Ste

Hi banditste

AFAIK the VCU, support bearings and props are the same on all models.

Good luck mate. Let us know how you get on.

The V6 VCU had no damper, so if yours isn't a V6 make sure your VCU comes with a damper.

If you've done all that work mate then I'm sure you can handle a Getrag box :). Not many here can say that. If you do it, perhaps you could pen a write up? Guides for serious overhauls are rare and highly valued :).

Best of luck!

Cheers everyone, mine isnt the V6... only a 1.8ltr 4cyl

i am putting the VCU on today when my friend drops it all off for me.

as for the gearbox, i will give it a go once i get hold of one and i will take photo's of each step and put a post up :D

It's a 1.8 K series so it has a PG1 box ;)

It's not a hard job to change once you have taken the IRD off it!! There are 4 bolts fixing the box and IRD together, 2 bolts are easy, the other 2 are not so easy. Then there is the gear selector roll pin to knock out, sometimes it's easy and others not!! I can't see a need to remove the sub-frame to swap the box tbh??

Thats brilliant advice, thanks alot Nodge68!!!

Ive just fit the FL's VCU and props, went on brilliantly!!!
I have drove it down the road and i can hear a sort of faint whining noise which gets a little louder the faster i go

now i have never had a VCU fitted to the car so i dont know if that is normal or not?
also i bolted up the props fine then when i come to bolt up the VCU i noticed the holes on the bearing holders (which you use to bolt it to the chassis) are longated holes!!!

Is there a certain way you need to position the brackets or do i just get them as straight as possible to the chassis?

The whining noise is almost certainly shot VCU bearings. :(

The elongated holes are as you suggest to ensure that you set the mounts up at 90degrees to the centre-line of the vehicle.

New GKN mounts with FAG bearings are £32 a pair from Foundry4X4 in a GKN box or exactly the same GKN mounts with FAG bearings in a LandRover box from the main dealers for £80 each - you choose. ;)

There are even cheaper unbranded ones on eBay - if you fancy changing them every 3 months or so. The GKN ones should last at least 80K if set up right.

gutted... proper gutted :frown:

im going to get under it again tomorrow and make sure it is bolted up to the chassis perfect... i rang my friend up today, he came down and i took him for a quick run round the block and my my friend is adament that the VCU did not make that noise before he stripped down his FreeLander!!!

so with a little luck i might just have the brackets a little cockeyed :dizzy:

also now that i have put the VCU on the grinding noise has appeared in 1st gear aswell!!!!

so now it grinds in 1st, 2nd and 4th gear... could this be the IRD/Transfer box???
I was thinking it was the gearbox but it doesnt explain why 1st gear didnt do it before!!!

Hope you understand what i mean
