Can anyone tell me the weights of a 2.25 Diesel engine, as well as the standard 4 speed gearbox. I would also like to know the approximate weight of the axles.

I have a 500kg engine crane available. I presume this should lift the engine easily enough?

Thanks for any info.
 
Engines about 250kg IIRC and about 150kg for the box as a rough guess or thats what it felt like to me when I was carrying it round the yard (a nice wide strop over shoulders and lift with your legs)
 
Look carefully at the arm (if it's that type) for load reduction markings. If it's a 500kg crane, it might be down to 200kg or so at full arm extension. It's prob fine with safety factor and all that.

Rattlegun: I was aware of the weight limits on the arm at different extensions, but thanks for posting it as you didn't know that.
 
So can anyone come up with a definite figure?

I need to get everything (engine, box, axles) into the back of a transit which has a maximum capacity of 750kg.
 
I use a 500kg hoist it works no problem for anything land rover related, but you need to remember that it can lift 500 kg in the un-extended position. at the furthest point it may only lift 150kg, and at that point it can tip over if you're not careful
 
I can answer my own question here as I was able to weigh an engine with a pallet truck with built in digital scales.

The figure is approx 280 kg for a 2 1/4 Litre 4 cylinder diesel series engine.

I will do the gearbox as well when I get chance, for anyone who may need to know in future.
 
by law SWL is slightly under weight by a strained or breaking load that's what I learnt at college, in mechanic's and boat building apprenticeship so hope that helps, the breaking load is different depending on the SWL so you'll have to look up model type or if a decent and British make look them up or contact manufacturer,
 
but then by the nature ofthe name "SAFE working load" you want to go guessing that it can be higher.

if it was higher rated than the SWL and still safe the manufacturer would be stating so and charging more for it .....
 
well ei, true but engine and box will never exceed SWL or strain working load anyway.

basically if you have a hoist then get one that can lift at least 550 - 750KG
 
haha , you say your kirrie but were or originally a dundonian ? Ei ei peeehs an an ingin in an aw ei. the way you write "well Ei" i read that just like my dad - hes from there.

my hoist is 1 tonne SWL - but at its extreme length its only 250kg SWL - it struggled to even lift with a v8 and lt85 in one piecea at max. i had to take it down to the second extension to lift it safely.

if you have a 500kk SWL crane and its at its extension its SWL is only a fraction of its max SWL which is at minimal extension - probably in the region of 100kg. - leverage/fulcrums etc etc.
 
Ei, I have an old Clarke hoist not that heavy duty but it lifted a gmc halftrack m13 engine on second extension I abused my hoist, and that engine with all on weighs 1043.2 kg just under, and if doing anything like this weight use a thick bit of would use 6x5 pull to second or 3rd extention drill holes to locate accordingly then bolt and big washer (because you'll need it) to stop or share the strain, the rams can take quite a bit if strain,. Make the most of the least! But this method does work, been there done it and if I can do that on a jimmy imagine what or how it'd cope with poxy brit ****!!
 
I also managed to get an accurate weight of the gearbox/transfer box using the same pallet truck. For furture reference the weight of both is 90kg (dry).

Hi. Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but am I right in thinking that the 2.25 petrol engine would be a bit lighter than the diesel one?

Significantly the same. The big difference there is the weight of the injection pump/injectors and the vaccum pump if so fitted vs. the weight of the distributor.

10-20 pounds I suspect, no more.Use the same figure and you won;t go far wrong.
 
According to the w'shop manual, for a 2.25 diesel (Hard Top) the unladen axle weights are Front 1,636 lbs and Rear 1,398 lbs, but that's obviously with the rest of the vehicle on top. Not really v helpful. It has no info on engine weight, about the only stat missing.
