So... I've never actually done a waterpump replacement before - but no time like the present, eh?
My car decided to dump a couple of liters (hard to tell when it's all on the asphalt) of coolant a couple of days prior to Christmas, which lead me to store it in the company garage - which handily works as the figurative 'rug' in the whole 'sweeping it under the rug-scenario'. No leakage when sitting there, but some (maybe a couple of milliliters) when I let it idle a while as a test. Not really long enough to really test it, but with the temperature being as cool as it is and it not really gushing out I should be able to transport it home for further checks in the coming days.
From what I can make out the leak is coming from the waterpump, which has then gotten onto the belts and sprayed some in the engine compartment.
Either way, I had been noticing a faint sound of 'something's not quite alright' coming from what I felt was just said waterpump - so I had pondered a change even beforehand.
A couple of question for a rookie:
- As ever, when I enter the registration plate number into an online parts store I get roughly 55,000 waterpumps that are said to work with my car. Only difference, besides their use of stock picture, is the manufacturer.
Anyone have any experience on this? Should I just splurge on an original? Maybe get one straight from BMW?
- Anything else I should look into doing while I'm down there? Seems fairly easy to get at, but might as well do some 'preemptive strikes' if there are recommendations of such.
Much obliged.
