Watching wheeler dealers a couple of weeks back and the mechanic ed china used a waterless coolant in an old triumph as he said the car was known for over heating, thought this may good to use in the freelander and may save a few engines.

After he'd removed the coolant and flushed the sytem then refilled the with the new waterless coolant he removed the radiator cap when the car was upto temperature saying the coolant as no water in it doesn't reach boiling point and as we all know you can't do that with the coolant we usally use is 50/50.

It was expensive £90 but he said it would never need changing, maybe worth using in the freelander.

Please don't disrespect mechanics by calling Ed China one please.
 
I've heard of it before. Also know a bloke around the corner from me who used it in his td5 and overheated it which resulted in a new engine although not sure if the waterless coolant or his lack of common sense were to blame on that situation.
 
Cooling isnt the only function. What are the lubricating properties? what make you think it will stop stress cracking of plastics, or poor design of the cooling system. Its USP is that it boils at a higher temperature - that is all

It does also say that as it does not contain oxygen (which is an element of water) it will "eliminate corrosion and electrolytic activity significantly". The interesting thing that they don't appear to discuss is how well it disipates heat. There are many references to water at high temps creating bubles around liners & the head which reduces heat disipation by 75% - but it doesn't (that I've seen) say how well their fluid does compared to current water/anti freeze mix.

rekon i'll stick with water 'n antifreeze .. changed at the prescribed interval :)
 
LRO have used waterless in one of their vehicles I think. Think it was a tratter.
I don't know if it's any good or not, so I'm happy to sit back and watch. Too much of a risk for my hippo.
 
I use this stuff, Dynolite Water Wetter. Works a treat, uses some chemical to disperse heat better than water and anti freeze alone. Used it for years in the Freelander and various other cars. Alot cheaper than the waterless stuff.
 
waterless is thicker than water, you need a good pump and flow around the engine. it's a bit pointless on normal cars imo
 
The cooling system is pressurized,k series use 1.1 bar a maximum pressure ......the waterless are working in this case ?....put pressure in system ?

cooling systems are pressurised to increase the boiling point of water. no need for it with waterless
