Hi all,

My 1.8 petrol seems to be using loads of water. At least once every couple of weeks it is below the min level in the reservior. The temp gauge remains normal and I cant see any leaks.

It has done 53k with full service histroy and although there doesnt seem to be any record it apparently has had a manufacturers mod to deal with the head gasket problem. p.s. is there any way of telling if this mod has been done.

Check for leaks when it's running and warmed up. But it sounds like HGF. If it has been modded then it will be in the service history. If it isn't then you've probably been shafted.

That sounds pretty terminal..Ive just bought it under warranty and already done a few hyndred motorway miles without incident. I would have thought that would have blown if it were on its last legs.

take it to a garage and get them to put dye in coolant, they then inspect with a UV light(or sumthin like that) for leaks. same prob with my old 1.8 found out small leak in radiator, only 400 quid for a new un!! cheers..

It could just be the expansion cap valve, new cap should sort it, doesnt seem like that much coolant loss to me.

Standard gasket - RVLQ000090
Payen Mk III - RVLB000320
Multi Layer Steel - LVB500190

There is a grey tab from the MLS.

hgf comes in all sorts of guises, think I hold the record of knowingly driving with hgf (with mayo and slight coolant loss) must have been for thousands of miles, passed its MOT in Feb with hgf, didnt fix it until July.. Warm weather ;)

Cleaning the mayo and gunk from coolant system and engine was fun. Dishwater powder works wonders.

as NI sez - try the coolant cap first - its the cheapest option. Or better still - take it back and tell them to sort it.

Yeah, I had this problem but its now fixed. Got home one night and backed the Freelander into the garage and noticed that it steaming away like a steam engine through the bonnet.

Just get a replacement coolant cap as they have a little safety release valve which releases the pressure / heat and they tend to get stuck into the open position over a little while.

Got mine replaced for £2.50.

If you do find that the new cap is also stuck then there might be problem with the head gasket....or....simplity sakes...a leak in the pipe lines.
