Hi all, I'm new to this game, my name is Craig and would greatly appreciate the sharing of your knowledge and experiences.

I finally got me a Freelander 1.8i (1999) yesterday, it has just been serviced and MOT'd, however the water temp gauge is low.

When I took it for a test drive I thought it hadn't moved as the engine had not been running long enough. Drove 70miles home tonight and no movement, maybe just stuck or loose connection somewhere?

Have checked there is water in it, and visually checked for anything abnormal in the engine, although there is a new HG water gauge is easiest way of checking for failure.

As said I am new to this and not great on engines  I understand with this one I need to learn quick. Any ideas? Please stick to Lehmans terms.

Thanks

:welcome: Craig.

yu won the lottery - an ya? yu have a 1.8 K series Gaylander which yu picked up yesterday and the water gauge dont work proper - take it back and tell em to fix it.

Thought I may have got that reply, garage is 70miles away but if its a free fix, then it must be done! Also don't suppose you have seen my other post? I already know your reply. However would be good to know the root of these problems so I can sort these out myself in future.

Cheers Mad Hat Man, also these Land Rover owners club events, any good for so-called 'gaylander' owners?

Thanks

Hi there take it for a run and when you get home leave it running and see if the gauge rises then, also you may notice hardly any hot air coming from heater if this is the case a previous owner may well have took the center out of the thermostat. I have seen this before as a safegaurd after hgf repair but all it does is keep the engine on choke longer and the engine never gets to its running temp hence using more fuel, hope this helps..

Hi Craig,

welcome to the forum ! I know it's a pain in the proverbial, but I would ring the garage and ask them to take a look. Now it might be something as simple as a wire off of the sender, and by all means have a look (if you know what you are looking for) Not sure where it is on the 1.8 k series, Northern Irelander is yo man for that. However, if it begins to unravel fast, at least you've identified the problem to the garage.

It will be well worth your while going to greenoval.com and downloading the rave cd. It's like a haynes manual, but better, and will cover your vehicle, and show you all kinds of things (like where the temperature sender is). As you've already stated, the temperature gauge is something to watch like a hawk, and you don't want to be taking any chances with it.

as for the group meetings, add your location to your CP (only generally, don't want your address or owt). The have a look in the off road / greenlane section at the bottom of the page and see who's about.

Now and again, some of the more experienced and hardened members run a beginners day on Salisbury Plain. Haven't had chance to take my freelander meself yet, but it seems that they are highly regarded.

good luck and welcome again.

Cheers Optimus Prime will download rave and update address, will definitely try looking for a beginners day! Always wanted a landy, even if just a freelander, so am reluctant to get rid, but needs must and all that!

Cheers for the welcome, glad a site like this exists where you don't have spotted students asking to be your friend or to wake up in the morning and find out you got 'poked' by some guy in the middle of the night, that you meet while on holiday!!!

i downloaded the rave thing but cant get it to open???

Understood. The reason I got it from a garage with a warranty (for what its worth) is so it would give a little time to learn the basics! Clearly from my landy choice I will need to be a quick learner!

Will have a check tomorrow and let you know. Was advised to ask you about the 1.8i Freelander, do you have one, or just very knowledgeable?
